The nordic cold is coming down to Barcelona and we are surprised with nasty cold and windy rain. Yesterday, I had ice in my hair!
Well, concerning that back in Berlin they have their river frozen, it is still pretty cozy.

Anyway, this does not really lift my mood for going to a conncert. Even less, when it is like a journey with the metro, but I really want to see them. Their name is Catalounge and the reason I want to go basically is that I met one of the musicians at Bread and butter and we had very good time working the cables there..

Their concept is nice (and pretty fashionable as well, I must admit): “Electro mestizaje” – It’s a very broad and versatile mix of all sorts of lounge, drum’n'bass, down and breakbeat spheres with snippets of guitars and minimal vocals. I especially liked their track Encantador de serpientes.

Tonight they play in Hospitalet which is not exactly Barcelona, but I’ll still go. They better be good!! I wanted to go tomorrow but the police shut down the place where they were supposed to play. Man, Barcelona really is getting conservative..

It’s the second day of the “tradeshow for selected brands” here in Barcelona and I think it is a big success. It is sunny and warm, people carry their coats in their hands and I know that 30 000 new people in their database make the organizers happy. A busy murmuring is in the air and the fashion people seem not to be too impressed by each others style.

Big sunglasses, baggy jeans that look vintage but cost a fortune, suits that do not look like suits and surprisingly similar haircuts are the visitors trademarks. Although those people deal with selected brands and individuality in general, they look astonishingly alike. It’s a very focused scene: There are the buyers for fashion stores and chains, independent designers who produce for their own little brands and also the big corporate machine players with their inescapable position terms like chief of marketing, brand manager or creative director. And they are all in the database..

Right now, I am in front of a bunch of hundreds of metres of messy ethernet cables. “Unwire them and then put them nicely into groups of 3, 5, 7 and 10 metres. Later you can assemble wall enclosures” my boss told me. I am the cable guy. I am a hand for constructing the Bread&Butter Barcelona which will take place from 18th to 20th of january. And I am glad to have a job. I guess I will be posting now and then some pictures from the construction site. It’s great, already many people working to put together one of the styliest fashion events in Europe. Stylewalker will be part of it.

Since september I am the proud owner of a Nitsa card. This card gives the owner discount in Barcelona’s best club, Nitsa in Apollo. The motto is “electrotechno use only” but actually it is less hard than it sounds. Quality electronic club music would be a good description as well.

The club is located in an old theatre and the guys, who also organize the excellent Primavera Sound Festival, invite fine and innovative DJs. I don’t know if I go out tonight, to the rather harsh electro DMX crew, but for sure I will enjoy the magnificent Dominik Eulberg january 21st.

That is my first movie! Yay! I shot it a few weeks ago, edited it yesterday and I am very pleased with the result. It’s a cooking session with my flatmate Juan, we cooked (well: he did, I filmed) fresh pasta with red pepper and roquefort cheese. Very simple, very good.

The best way to connect yourself to the internet in Barcelona with your wifi-able laptop is to become a member of the public libraries of Barcelona. Almost every one has a wireless router which you can access with your member number. It is totally free and the buildings are amazing, they give you a map and information about opening hours when becoming a member.

Right now I am sitting in the one in Raval, the Biblioteca Pública Sant Pau – Santa Creu in c/ Hospital. It is 15min before closing and they have the nice habit to turn on some music. In my case it’s Boby Dylan’s “Everybody must get stoned”.. Pleasent places, really.

That kid is one great talent. Recently arrived in Barcelona and already working for the national museum of art. Quite a success, I’d say..

Die öffentlichen Bediensteten Spaniens machen ab sofort nicht mehr zwischen zwei und vier Pause (oder auch mal zwischen eins und fünf), sondern zwischen zwölf und eins. Dann können sie auch um sechs nach Hause. (Financial Times Deutschland)

Es gibt aufgrund der Siesta sehr viele “Fernsehkinder” in Spanien, die mit der Schule fertig sind, wenn ihre Eltern gerade wieder arbeiten gehen. Dann hängen sie bis neun allein vorm TV, bis die Alten wieder kommen. Das findet keiner gut hier. Auch nicht gut ist, dass die Weltwirtschaft sowas wie die Siesta nicht versteht und warum man hier nicht um 15h anrufen kann, um Business zu machen.
El presidente Zapatero hat zwar die Privatwirtschaft dazu angehalten, es dem öffentlichen Beispiel gleich zu tun, aber ich werde wohl weiter oft um 15h vor verschlossenen Türen stehen: Vor der Bibliothek, vor dem Supermarkt, vor der Reinigung, die meine weißen Businesshemden stärken..

Und noch etwas ändert sich in Spanien zum neuen Jahr: Die Rauchergesetze. Ich fand es schon immer etwas merkwürdig, wie selbstverständlich die Leute hier z.B. in Apotheken rauchten. Jetzt wird in öffentlichen Gebäuden nicht mehr geraucht, nicht in Fahrstühlen (wow!) und vielleicht auch nicht mehr in der Uni.

Ich wohne zwar im fancy Stadtteil Borne mit coolen independent Modedesignern, schlicht-kühl eingerichteten asiatischen Restaurants und sehr netten Cocktailbars (auch der Mercado del Borne ist hier..), aber immer noch in Barcelona. Und da wird gestohlen, was das Zeug hält. Besonders meine Straße, die Princesa, hat den Ruf, die “Räuberstraße” zu sein. Um die ahnungslosen Touristen, die staunend und entspannt die Straße hinabschlendern auf die Gefahr hinzuweisen, steht jetzt seit ein paar Tagen deutlich “Mind your bag!” auf den Bürgersteigen. Ich hatte ja immer noch mal vor, so einen spektulären Raub zu filmen, das wird jetzt wohl ein bisschen schwieriger.
Wer Schwierigkeiten mit den Kommentaren hat – einfach die Frage beantworten! Welche Farbe ist orange? Orange! Aber die Spammer hält es immer noch nicht ab, ich muss echt mal so ein Text zu Bild – Feature einbauen..

I discovered the “Mercado del Borne” one week ago strolling around in my new barrio, el Born, and I was magically drawn into this light, modern and colourful art and book shop. It is a gallery, they sell t-shirts, books, paintings, posters, even shoes and other gimmicks by independent designers, like tie-style lenyards, … Moreover the people are really nice and helpful. Enjoy the crowds reaction to the third and final goal.

Langsam gewöhne ich mich an meine neue Wohnung. Am Anfang war ich ein bisschen skeptisch und wenig zufrieden, aber das liegt wohl an mir. Der nächtliche Lärm, die Aussicht auf einen kalten Winter (keine Heizung! dafür einen Kamin, aber keine Ahnung, ob der funktioniert..), der Nachbar, der pünktlich zu meinem Einzug ein Passwort auf sein W-lan legte, all das bereitete mir wirkliche Bauchschmerzen. Vor allem vor dem Hintergrund, dass ich einer anderen Wohnung mit allen Annehmlichkeiten, aber nur halb so romantisch, absagen musste. So muss ich jetzt, statt gemütlich am Wohnzimmertisch zu schreiben, durch die Stadt, auf der Suche nach freien Netzen nomadieren, aber vielleicht hat das auch sein Gutes. Man kommt mal raus und so. Solán de cabras. Ein Superwasser. Wäre ich Importeur, würde ich es nach Berlin in die P- und Kberger Feinkostläden schaffen. Nach Mitte sowieso.
Aus den Bergen, wenig natrium, schmeckt immer frisch, besonders bei Kater. Stylishe Verpackung, gibt’s auch in klein, für Clubs. Einziger Wermutstropfen: Sponsorn Real Madrid. Aber da muss man wohl mal großzügig sein.
Anmerkung:Man sollte bloß nicht auf die Idee kommen, in Barcelonas Altstadt Leitungswasser zu trinken. Entweder mal leidet an Blei- oder an Chlor-Choliken..

Denen, die denken, Werbung in Spanien sei nur für Großraumdiskotheken auf Weltniveau, sei gesagt, dass die TV Spots im spanischen Fernsehen ähnlich den spanischen Filmen mit einer tollen Ästhetik und auch oft mit Spitzen-Ideen arbeiten. Von Waschmittel (“detergente”) mal abgesehen, aber die Keativität der Werber fällt in dieser Kategorie wohl in der ganzen Welt den konservativen Konzernchefs zum Opfer..
Immer für Ideen offen dagegen ist Nike, die am Plaza Catalunya einen Bluetoothspot haben aufbauen lassen. Schaltet man bei seinem Handy Bluetooth ein, wird “Nike” erkannt, dann wird eine Übertragung angeboten, vielleicht ein Spiel oder ein Video, aber bei mir hat es leider nicht funktioniert. I never walk so much like I do in Barcelona. Always on the run from one place to the other, people call you spontaneously and most of the time it is too close to take the metro, but still a tough walk. While in the beginning the streets seem fantastic and one cannot stop staring, later you just want to arrive and get passed all the tourists and people who try to sell stuff.
So I really started to love my iPod I almost never used in Berlin. And everytime I find some free wi-fi access point I update my list of podcasts. My favourite is lately: The ChinesePod. A very well done podcast from Shanghai, a Chinese course with a new episode every day (34 until now) each about 10 minutes long.
So now people stare at me in the streets when I concentratedly repeat:
“ni hao!” “hung hao.” “nji schö tschon kwo re ma?” “bu schö..”
Update: Für alle deutschsprachigen Chinafreunde habe ich diesen schönen Ausschnitt aus dem Hörbuch “Gebrauchsanweisung für China” gefunden.

So, I had to find a mattress to sleep on. I looked in the same place I looked for flats (loquo.com) which offers jobs, services and used stuff, just like Craig’s list. I found a nice big and cheap one, nearly unused and went to Gracia to look at the offer. The mattress seemed friendly and rolled together with some tape it was quite willing to be carried around. The people looked at me a little confused but with sympathy, like “Everybody is free to find the friends he likes, no?”

Deswegen bin ich hier! Wunderschönes Herbstwetter, die Sonne scheint und ich mache einen Spaziergang zur Boquería, dem großen Markt im Zentrum von Barcelona. In der Mitte der großen, klassizistischen Halle sind die Fisch- und Meeresfrüchtestände, aber die sind montags zu. Drum herum gruppieren sich Gemüse und Obst, Nüsse und Trockenfrüchte, Fleisch, Käse, Bäcker. Es gibt ein paar Bars und zwei richtig gute Restaurants, die die besten und frischesten Produkte vom Markt verwenden. Alle Boqueria-Fotos in Flickr! Außerdem ist gerade Pilzsaison und das ist ein guter Anlass für einen neuen Bildschirmhintergrund.

Das ist so nett hier, im Raval, in der calle riera alta, bei Albert und Sarah. Zentral, Bars, Leute, Nachtkioske (in Köln heißen die wohl “Büdchen..”). Und je mehr finstere Löcher für 400€ sie mir zeigen, umso weniger will ich hier weg. Ich hoffe, sie entscheiden sich für mich, wie gesagt, ich geh jetzt mal abwaschen und dann nach Gracia, Wohnung anschauen.. Wish me luck!

Wow, Barcelona. Ich komme aus dem Flugzeug und die Schwüle erschlägt mich förmlich. Nichts mit lauer Mittelmeerbrise, statt Abkühlung und milder Sonne vermischen sich die Schweißtropfen mit dem Umzugsdreck von gestern. Vier Taschen, keine Platten, aber eine dicke Bettdecke im Gepäck. Auch hier wird es kalt im Winter. Muskelkater von gestern.

Schaue bei Albert über die Dächer, suche nach Netzen und finde zwei ungesicherte. In einem Kommentar wird mir eine Wohnung angeboten. Jetzt gleich in eine Bar, Barca gegen Athen anschauen. Fängt ganz gut an..
