This weekend in Berlin will see art, music, politics and overall a mashup of all: Friday night will see Substance, the biggest Dubstep party on the European continent so far, at Berghain, there is the big art festival Videoakt on friday and saturday where Stylewalker’s going to spin, and on sunday people living in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg have the chance to cast their votes for or against the urban development project Mediaspree.

I was pointed out to a really great interview, done by Pretty Cool People Interviews. Tom takes us along Barcelona, shows some sites and pieces and alongway talks about his philosophy. It’s a good feeling to understand how little, pretty things can and should make a difference in a often harsh urban world.

Tom14, “born in Brazil and based in Barcelona”, who “is a street artist in more than one way. He works on the streets, sometimes literally on the surface of the road, but besides this, his work is also deals with the rights on the street. It’s all about reclaiming the streets from real estate investors who make large profits from urban planning projects and do nothing about improving the situation for the local people.”

Check it out: Tom 14, Barcelona street artist interview

Changing room Barcelona Calor 08Changing Room Barcelona is a concept to present new, exclusive and exciting fashion in a very unusual way. People are invited every now and then to participate in a showroom, located in different hotel rooms.

The next edition, called “Calor 08″ will take place at the hotel “Chic & basic” in Calle Princesa 50, this Saturday, June 14th, from 11 AM to 9 PM. On the website you will find many slideshows with pictures from past shows.

Although I am not living there anymore, I can ensure that it’s still a very vibrant and creative city, especially in fashion. Not at last because of that it has become home of Bread&Butter..

Got it?

La casetaIf one bar in Barcelona has made an impressive career this year it must have been “La Caseta del Migdia“. Even without being in Barcelona, you could hear the talk about it all over Europe. Also Bread and Butter had the final celebration in that amazing place on Montjuic. Situated on the south corner of the Montjuic Castell, you have a great view over the harbour on one side and over the city to the other. It is open air, they serve fine food and good drinks and DJs spin chilly rare grooves while you contemplate the Mediterranean.

You can get there, taking the 55 bus and walk upwards to the castle, In summer, on weekend evenings it used to be open until 2am, now I assume they close a little earlier. Here is another little article about La Caseta del Migdia

Pechakucha Berlin

September 26, 2007 on 1:45 pm by Thomas | In Art, Barcelona Life | Say something!

Alex von Furstenberg.. took place yesterday at Tape Gallery and was again a nice get-together of creative people with more or less interesting subjects and more or less well done speeches. But to be honest, I expected a little more. The tow guys from Aka-Aki were impossible to understand, others, like Cosima Reif were so nervous the hysterical laughters produced feedbacks. But I liked very much David Henry Brown Jr’s talk about his personality Alex von Fürstenberg which got him into celebrity parties in New York and of course Tobi X’s Firefox plugin “Timemachine” which turns webpages into a state of like ten years ago: Full of candles, christmas trees, animated gifs, midi melodies and star backgrounds.

Sonar 2007 sets

June 19, 2007 on 12:57 pm by Thomas | In Barcelona Life, DJ mixes | Say something!

Achja, by the way, die Elektroaktivisten (formerly known as Drogensumpf) haben ein paar nette Sonar 07 Sets ausgegraben, unter anderem Beastie Boys, Chateau Flight (after listening to most of the mixes, this is the best imho..), Jeff Mills, Dave Clark und Uffie & Feadz!

Here is a great movie about some street art in the barrio of Raval in Barcelona where I used to live. Well almost. My barrio was Sant Antoni and everytime I went to the centre I had to cross Raval. It’s a unique mix of cultures, art and streetlife, dark and shady, chaotic, very lively and inspiring.

The movie is done by Fritz Gnad who is (certainly amongts many other talents) a video artist and lives in Barcelona. He publishes hie videos and other obeservations in his blog feezen//freezen. [via Polylog/Wildpark]

KubikNext weekend I’ll be in Berlin, neither in Sweden nor in Barcelona. Which is a shame because in Sweden they’ll be celebrating midsommar, the endless day and in Barcelona Sónar, the endless night. The multimedia and electronic music festival with acts like Beastie Boys, Justice or Devon starts today. Many people come to Barcelona, only for all the parties that surround Sónar without ever setting foot on the festival area. Especially the parties at the beach are famous and Sónar fills the chiringuitos with party people ever since we made a party there about four years ago (yes, that was actually not so common back then). And the Kubik concept spreads to Barcelona, opens this weekend.

Update: There’s a special midsommer celebration open air party going on for three days in a formy red army military base in Bernau, close to Berlin with many, many great electronic music acts organized by such infamous party crews like Pentagonik, Wir sind Park or Patentblau.: Check out the lineup, pictures and how to get there!

And here is a little impression of how it looks now: Michael Mayer on the beach for Sónar 2006 Continue >>

Tarifa Semana SantaThe road trip was awesome. We went down all of Spain’s Meditarranean coast - from Barcelona to Tarifa. Climbing, looking at impressive sites like the Alhambra in Granada, passing Almería and Cordoba, staying in comfortable surfer’s huts in Tarifa, going over to Tanger, Marcocco, partying in Marbella and climbing in Torrembada again. All over: perfect days with lots of unexpected encounters, pleasent and unpleasent surprises (people we don’t even know let us sleep in their apartment - the motor of the rented car breaks down 11pm on the motorway..) and many images that will stick in my mind. Enjoy some of the pictures that tell a little part of the story or watch even more pictures on Flickr!

Marco Delvai in the mix

July 13, 2006 on 11:19 am by Thomas | In Barcelona Life, DJ mixes, Music | 4 Comments

Marco DelvaiFoto from Wasabi-BlogMarco Delvai aka Markus Blauenberg is a DJ from Barcelona and why he took this funny German name is a story he has yet to tell me..

I am proud to present two of his mixes, he manages to combine the Barcelonian hedonism and the Berlin minimal sawtooth attacks. Very hypnotic, very danceable, very pushy, very cool. With his partner Jordi he forms “Wasabi experience“, they play in clubs like Lekasbah or City Hall and at the beach, of course.

Apparently, the last weeks have been full of experiences, Sonar, Sant Jordi, hot Spanish summers, who knows Barcelona, knows what I am talking about. So enjoy the first mix, produced before Sonar, which is a little more laid back, even shy and the second one, straight-forward, even a little distorted and much more adventorous.

Chiringuito BarcelonaFoto: Mario BarcelonaAbout exactly three years ago, I made a beach party in Barcelona as a closing event for Sonar festival. It was great, we had cool Cologne DJs spinning (M.I.A., Sascha Mikloweit, Marc Lansley from Substatic..), but unfortunately we had to stop at 01:00h because of the noise or the license. Of course, we could not build our own infrastructure on the beach, without permission it was just too dangerous, our lawyer adviced us. So we relied on one of the popular “chiringuitos”, bars at the city’s beaches, that exist all over the coast, big and small, simple and pompous, oldfashioned and modern-stylish.

Since my current home Berlin is not really capital of the most beautiful, neither succesful football, my other home, Barcelona, pretty much fills that emotional void in me.

So, tonight, get ready for the battle of giants: AC Milan vs FC Barcelona.
Kaka vs Ronaldinho, Shevchenko vs Eto’o, Inzaghi vs Puyol..

To put you into the mood for great football, watch this video (Ronaldo - yes, actually used to be a good player - Maradona, Pelé and many more..)

Joga BonitoCertainly, we are going to see a war for awareness in summer when the world is watching the football world cup and the opponents: Adidas vs Nike.

Nike already started a massive internet campaign with “Joga bonito” (Portuguese for “Play nice”). You’ll find many cool movies and a community: www.joga.com (the page with the fastest growing rate of attention lately, as per Alexa.com)

Talk about viral effects: The videos are little masterpieces about how to play beautiful football and the website makes it easy to share. Of course yu can send an email with link, but there’s also a code snippet, people can put into their websites. Here’s an example: Continue >>

Barcelona Street Art

March 19, 2006 on 5:06 pm by Thomas | In Barcelona Life, Webfindings | 3 Comments

Dear visitor from barcelonastreetart.com - welcome! This is a blog, almost daily updated, about music, lifestyle and science from Berlin, Barcelona and the net. Go to the homepage, use the categories to browse to the content or the RSS-feed to stay updated!

Barcelona Street ArtWhile looking for Pian&Hase on Google (because they failed to give me their press information.. artists - you need an agent!) I found Mr. Case. He not only runs the stunning page barcelonastreetart.net, but also documents the works of urban decorators on Flickr and YouTube. Watch his movie about the short life of a street art object. Pian & Hase Magazine Launch

March 19, 2006 on 1:53 am by Thomas | In Barcelona Life | 3 Comments

Out Now!Now I have to say goodbye to Barcelona and my heart is bleeding not only a little. A nice last event was the launch of Venezolanian artists Pian & Hase at the Intro store in Gracia. They produce pop arty, streety and hiphoppy designs.
They already worked in many different places all over the world and now really like it in Barcelona. Watch more fotos on Stylewalker@Flickr.

ButanglasanimationRicard Marxer Piñón is an artist who combines the mathematics of signal processing with the esthetics of font, fotos and sound. On a highly abstract level he e.g. uses reduced letters to create new shapes out of words.

The animation on the right side is a processed picture of burning gas in a glass. He is also working with the (to me, until now, unknown) programming language Processing I recommend his highly entertaining website ricardmarxer.com.

I got to now him about a common friend who is an astrophysicist. Oh, it’s nice when the worlds blend..

Take a nap in Barcelona

February 15, 2006 on 3:02 pm by Thomas | In Barcelona Life | 1 Comment

Yesterday, 1am, Ramblas. A cold tuesday, not many people out, almost more beer sellers and party promoters than actual partygoers. So, this image is perfect for this evening, a guy, taking a nap on his bike, in an almost, impossible physical position. I hope, he did not fall down later.. Continue >>

Skating Ciutadella

February 10, 2006 on 6:14 pm by Thomas | In Barcelona Life, Movies | Say something!

Skater in Parc CiutadellaRecently, Shir Khan told me that Barcelona definetely was a city that makes him want to skate again (I did not know that he ever was - but, you know, everybody has a past and we are not getting any younger..). In this case, he is definetely going to like this video, shot one weekend ago. The light is amazing and do you hear the birds?! Continue >>

Fire baby!Since I reached my limit last month I now uploaded the last pictures from Bread and Butter Barcelona to my Flickr-Account. Browse, fire, brands and people!

By the way - my article about Bread and BUTTER Barcelona is not only the longest I ever wrote in stylewalker.net but also one of the most popular!

Electric BarcelonaA Stylewalker-recommendation: The best internet café (and of the cheapest) in central Barcelona is “Electric“. Situated right next to the cathedral, on Missa Ferrer it has a very modern and industrial style.
Since they opened only two weeks ago, it is still quite minimally decorated and right now the two owners (cool guys from Berlin!) are talking to artists to decorate the place.

Members pay 1,20€ an hour and get coffee or tee for free!

The stolen goal

February 2, 2006 on 12:40 am by Thomas | In Barcelona Life, Movies | 1 Comment

Last weekend, the football game Celta Vigo vs Real Madrid ended 1:2 for Madrid. Spain is upset because a clear goal against Real was not approved by the referees. Here is the video of the disputed goal.

The nordic cold is coming down to Barcelona and we are surprised with nasty cold and windy rain. Yesterday, I had ice in my hair!
Well, concerning that back in Berlin they have their river frozen, it is still pretty cozy.

Anyway, this does not really lift my mood for going to a conncert. Even less, when it is like a journey with the metro, but I really want to see them. Their name is Catalounge and the reason I want to go basically is that I met one of the musicians at Bread and butter and we had very good time working the cables there..

Their concept is nice (and pretty fashionable as well, I must admit): “Electro mestizaje” - It’s a very broad and versatile mix of all sorts of lounge, drum’n'bass, down and breakbeat spheres with snippets of guitars and minimal vocals. I especially liked their track Sound Icon Encantador de serpientes.

Tonight they play in Hospitalet which is not exactly Barcelona, but I’ll still go. They better be good!! I wanted to go tomorrow but the police shut down the place where they were supposed to play. Man, Barcelona really is getting conservative..

It’s the second day of the “tradeshow for selected brands” here in Barcelona and I think it is a big success. It is sunny and warm, people carry their coats in their hands and I know that 30 000 new people in their database make the organizers happy. Bread and butter peopleA busy murmuring is in the air and the fashion people seem not to be too impressed by each others style.

Big sunglasses, baggy jeans that look vintage but cost a fortune, suits that do not look like suits and surprisingly similar haircuts are the visitors trademarks. Although those people deal with selected brands and individuality in general, they look astonishingly alike. It’s a very focused scene: There are the buyers for fashion stores and chains, independent designers who produce for their own little brands and also the big corporate machine players with their inescapable position terms like chief of marketing, brand manager or creative director. And they are all in the database..
