Tomorrow I am off to London for four days, yay! The occasion couldn’t be more interesting. One of Britains most promising artists holds his first exhibition at Fred galleryOne in the Other, 45 Viner St. Why promising? Not because some of the most influentious collectors (does the name Damian Hurst sound familiar e.g.) have options on his work, no: because it is absolutely amazing.

The man spends months (and I mean it: MONTHS) inside, drawing pictures with pencils in such detail and finesse with such dark humour, love and creativity that the bizarre scenes he depicts bound its spectators for a looong time. Some of his work can be seen on his myspace but the format does not do justice to his art at all. I am not a big expert but his work reminds me of MC Escher as well in his way of drawing as in the absurdity of his subjects.

Was mich richtig ärgerlich macht, sind gute Ideen, die nicht richtig umgesetzt werden. Da kann man Videos zur neuen Chemical Brothers “Do it again” auf der Album-Site we-are-the-night.de hochladen und einige dort sind richtig gut, aber kann man direkt auf einzelne Videos verlinken? Denkste.

Also, liebe PULK Berlin und studio orange (werden im Impressum der Seite als ausführende Agenturen genannt), bitte das nächste Mal zu Ende denken. What are the best parties for tomorrows “Fête de la musique” in Berlin? Well first, here is the official program, ordered by neighbourhoods. Mostly openair and all for free, this worldwide music festival which started in Paris is Berlin’s halfofficial kick-off party for the summer.

I’d like to mention some parties, the Dirty Kicks/Neurocomic party at Mauerpark and later at Aqua Ritter (Ritterstr.24, Xberg) a location which is supposed to be very special. (Lineup: Gebr Teichmann, Aroma, Jean Ferré and more)

The other one is the supposedly last openair party (Line-up: Koletzki, Woody, Diringer, Luna City Express) by famous club Sternradio which is going to close soon. And last but not least there is the Disco Mafia at Pulp Mansion at Saarbrückerstr. 36. Check out the flyer!

Listen to this. It’s the result of an interactive installation residing at Potsdamer Platz at the moment, celebrating Mannheim’s 400th birthday. The city in Germany’s southwest is structured in squares, with streets without names but with letters and numbers. Very Bauhaus indeed. It’s also famous for its pop academy so there’s several associations to the so called “sound of the squares” installation:

Achja, by the way, die Elektroaktivisten (formerly known as Drogensumpf) haben ein paar nette Sonar 07 Sets ausgegraben, unter anderem Beastie Boys, Chateau Flight (after listening to most of the mixes, this is the best imho..), Jeff Mills, Dave Clark und Uffie & Feadz!

Ein Weißbrot tritt an, um das Erbe von J Dilla und Jeru the Damaja fortzuführen, und ein bisschen nach Mobb Deep klingt der Gute auch. (Selbst-)bewusste Texte, smarter Flow über fluffigen Beats, die an DJ Premier, Pete Rock oder die Beatnuts erinnern: “Early 90s east coast head nod meets late 80s old school hip hop made by schizophrenic Iowan possessed by gremlins” beschreibt sich der Mann aus Iowa (das Internet spült einfach alles an die Oberfläche).

Here is a great movie about some street art in the barrio of Raval in Barcelona where I used to live. Well almost. My barrio was Sant Antoni and everytime I went to the centre I had to cross Raval. It’s a unique mix of cultures, art and streetlife, dark and shady, chaotic, very lively and inspiring.

The movie is done by Fritz Gnad who is (certainly amongts many other talents) a video artist and lives in Barcelona. He publishes hie videos and other obeservations in his blog feezen//freezen. [via Polylog/Wildpark]

I talked about the club Week-end Berlin here already several times, especially this post has gained some attention. Now, after opening another room in the 15th floor of the same skyscraper, they did their masterpiece by turning the roof of one Berlin’s highest buildings into a club area. You have an amazing view over the city from there and it’s a perfect place to watch the sunset and listen to some housy beats.

So be sure to come early, not only for the sunset but for not paying 10€ after 22h. And bring a jacket or a sweater. Although it might be warm down in the streets, in the 17th floor there is quite some wind going on. Here are some pictures I took, after the break.

The Broken Beats kommen aus Dänemark und sind gerade auf Deutschland-Tour, leider ist ihr Konzert in Hamburg heute abend erstmal ihr letztes. Denn die Combo macht umwerfende Musik und hat dabei fantastische Songs im Programm, die ins Ohr gehen und gleichzeitig überraschen. Gerade ist ihr drittes Album “In the ruin for the perfect” beim deutschen Indielabel Buback herausgekommen. Hinter dem Link verbergen sich tolle Geschichten über dreistündige Auftritte und verzauberte Polizisten - the Broken Beats lieben die Musik und vermitteln es allen, die sie treffen.

Die jungen Skandinavier haben bereits einen so elaborierten und kompletten Klang, als hätten sie ihr ganzes Leben nichts anderes gemacht. Prächtige Arrangements mit Streichern und vielen Stimmen, Wendungen, Dynamikbrüche und mitreißende Melodien erinnern an Supergrass, an Radiohead und Muse, die erste Soulwax-Platte, aber auch an A-ha, die Beach Boys oder die Flaming Lips. Hier sind zwei Songs, die mir besonders gut gefallen, “Copy” vom erwähnten Album und die französische Version von “Essentials”.

Next weekend I’ll be in Berlin, neither in Sweden nor in Barcelona. Which is a shame because in Sweden they’ll be celebrating midsommar, the endless day and in Barcelona Sónar, the endless night. The multimedia and electronic music festival with acts like Beastie Boys, Justice or Devon starts today. Many people come to Barcelona, only for all the parties that surround Sónar without ever setting foot on the festival area. Especially the parties at the beach are famous and Sónar fills the chiringuitos with party people ever since we made a party there about four years ago (yes, that was actually not so common back then). And the Kubik concept spreads to Barcelona, opens this weekend.

Update: There’s a special midsommer celebration open air party going on for three days in a formy red army military base in Bernau, close to Berlin with many, many great electronic music acts organized by such infamous party crews like Pentagonik, Wir sind Park or Patentblau.: Check out the lineup, pictures and how to get there!

Bob Geldof reitet außer der Sucht nach Aufmerksamkeit, wenn er sich ein ums andere Mal als Weltretter geriert. Das, was er heute als angeblicher Chefredakteur der Bild-Zeitung ablieferte, setzt der ganzen scheinheiligen Soße die Krone auf.

Letzterer hat angeblich auch das Week-End gemietet, um dort eine anständige After-Show Party zu feiern. Die passende Musik dazu wäre sicher John Dahlbäcks Mix aus dem Stockholmer Teatron. Technoid, funky, kratzig, treibend, überraschend. Ein tolles Set, das hervorragend hierher passt.

A chiseled structure becoming alive is the London 2012 brand that was revealed yesterday. An image movie shows how the logo becomes part of the environment and while the aesthetics of the logo are a matter of taste and I think the idea is pretty unusual and, ehm, edgy, the movie is kind of scary.

Pic by Magsen from the G8 Flickr PoolShame on me: Da hatte ich schon vor mehr als einer Woche Konzerte an der Ostsee im Rahmen des G8-Protests (Protest, ich weiß nicht, irgendwie scheue ich mich dieses Wort zu benutzen, wie wärs mit: Alternative?) angekündigt. Und keiner hat’s gemerkt, dass das ja viel zu früh war. Anyway. Das Treffen beginnt erst in diesen Tagen am Mittwoch und vorgestern gab es Krawall in Rostock.

Keiner weiß genau, was passiert ist, Staatsgewalt und Opposition schieben sich die Schuld zu, es ist hässlich. Und auch ich muss mir wohl eingestehen, dass meine Hoffnung, es gäbe lediglich ein buntes Festivaltreiben um den vermaledeiten Zaun, zumindest vorerst gescheitert ist. Man kann nur hoffen, dass Leute wie die Hedonistische Internationale mit friedlichem Weltverbesserung-Rave (Donnerstag, am Strand) das Bild des Protests von schwarz-vermummt wieder auf bunt schalten.

Remember the Cobra Snake and Last Nights Party? Well here’s some slick London party photography called Dirty Dirty Dancing. To be honest, it’s not so dirty at all, at least not in the way like the other pages. Maybe London is different? I doubt it, maybe they just not as extroverted..

Yes! It’s done, next to me lies a big book and I can’t believe I have written it. Last night, at 2am, my laptop took his last breath and stopped to cooperate with the power supply. I knew I had only a limited time left to finish the thesis and I saw the display going like “you have 40 minutes left” - “you have 20 minutes left” - “you have 10 minutes left”. I had never typed that fast. The laptop turned off one second after copying the latest version on a memory stick. Phew..

Thank you so much everybody who helped me and supported me (thx for the comments!), especially Nici, Chrissie, Pit, Max and Jana! You are great!!
