Videodoku: Fußball in Argentinien

Ben UFO at Boilerroom

Here is a great video mix by Ben UFO which I am currently listening to, at 9pm on a friday, ready to let the week behind me. And the music is perfect for that, a bit discoish, a bit breaky, a bit dreamy, nicely mixed, the way I like to do it, too (and sometimes even succeed). Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Mix of the week: Sbtrkt essential mix

Sbtrkt came out of nowhere and just like James Blake, Jamie Woon and Nicolas Jaar captured very fast a place in the area of bassy, dubby and abstract dance and pop music. All they did, they did well and everything seems planned and thought. Their debut record “Sbtrkt” is very complete and well done, they have a real hit on it to get radio plays (“Pharaos“), they remixed Radiohead and released mixtapes for RinseFM and Mary Ann Hobbs.
Here is the essential mix which starts very shattered but then rolls up to some real danceable dubsteppy and breaky floor monster. Click here for the tracklist. Firts of december they will be in Berlin at Lido

Fluxus and me

Next friday I’ll be playing at an event with some legends from the 60ies Fluxus art movement. I am thrilled!

Come around to see Ben Patterson, one of the Fluxus founders, Iput, Eric Andersen and Willem de Ridder at the Schau Fenster Gallery at Lobeckstr.30, from 8pm. A good way to end the week and start the friday night!

The opening party is part of the “Fluxus Today” conference by the Akademie der Künste and the exhibition “The lunatics are on the loose“.

Pretty cool to see my name in such an arty environment. Let alone the question: What am I supposed to play?! Well, I have some days to think left, I guess. Suggestions for songs are welcome in the comments.

360 degree videos and panoramic ball cameras

Ever more often lately, I stumble across 360 degree or panoramic video and photo ideas, tools and gadgets. Now I even have the great pleasure to work on a project with that kind of technology together withe the awesome company called Yellowbird from the Netherlands. They do amazing 360° videos which are embedable and follow the linear story of a video along a timeline, and whilst the film is moving you can change the viewpoint of the camera, like looking at the sky or behind you. Their most successful video certainly is the one from a snowboarders perspective which went pretty viral which is understandable, have a look:

I first stumbled across them when I saw a 360° degree video which was embedded into Dorito’s YouTube channel and you could follow a guy into an underground club and watch it again and again to see what was going on behind you, e.g. Sadly, it’s not online anymore.

Today, I discovered a “throwable panoramic ball camera” which is filled with cameras and takes pictures once it’s up in the air. You download the pictures then and put them together with a software, the result is a clickable, zoomable and rotatable panoramic image. Nice! Find out more on Jonas Pfeil’s page and watch a demo video here:

Jamie Lidell on iMaschine

Even if I risk becoming a Native Instruments fanboy here, this is another great showcase of one of their products, presented by the even greater Jamie Lidell. NI released an iPhone app called iMaschine which according to the video is a little all-in-one sequencer, drum machine, synth and recorder to play around with and build little songs. As Jamie does impressively in this video, apparently without editing: building a beat, putting some bass groove on and some chorus and finally verse vocals on top of it, all lying comfortably in bed like on a sunday morning. Pretty amazing for 4,99 EUR in the app store. Let’s see if I get out of bed this weekend if I get this little toy right now.

The story of Alessio Rastani, the trader

‎”I am a trader. We traders don’t care how you’re going to fix the economy. I dream about recession every night because you can make money in a recession.” This interview at BBC shocked viewers worldwide by its blatant openness and brutal honesty. It shows the total ignorance of financial market professionals towards the well being of the economy and its effect on the people. Alessio Rastani, a trader from London speaks about how they profit from worldwide recession and debt crisis of countries and what techniques can be used to strengthen the effect of a declining market allowing hedge funds to make money by placing bets on countries going bankrupt or crashing stock values.

It’s ironic that BBC reporter Robert Peston shortly believed that they were set up by satirical cultural jamming group Yes Men because nobody would believe a trader would be so open about his views of the world. Shortly later, he confirmed that this interview was actually legit and Forbes just published an interview with Rastani, stating him “I trade the momentum”. Right now his Facebook wall is full of hate, as you can see below but to be honest: Rastani does not really say something new. Everybody knows that there is a lot of money to make if you push the right buttons in a crisis. Rastani is a freelance trader, he works from home and actually he is only one in thousands of people who move money in the market. But he gives the anonymous and abstract thing “financial markets” a face.

People cannot understand what these markets are and why they have such a great influence on their jobs, their pensions, the news and politicians everyday. It’s a conglomerate of people, institutions, robots who all act according to different rules and nobody understands the motivations or mechanisms fully. Whenever a person pops up, the boss of a bank, a hedge fund manager or a freelancer trader who speaks his mind people get furious. But Rastani is only a small piece a big system, so don’t shoot the messenger. On the contrary, you actually have to pay the guy some respect for his honesty and transparency. In the Forbes interview is surprised by the attention he gets and says: “I think it’s overblown. I have no idea why I’m getting this attention. I don’t think it was news. For someone to say what I said, I thought everybody already knew this kind of stuff. The big players of funds rule the world, I don’t think that was news.” And sad but true, he is probably right.

Movie about Berlin techno scene in the 90ies

The electronic music magazine Resident Advisor has started a new video series called “Real Scenes”. The third issue is about Berlin and its protagonists during the last 30 years. The film is great because it explains Berlins techno history in a very understandable way but also very well captures the feeling of getting lost and trying to escape from the pressure which always has and will be a motive for partying, especially in Berlin. The photography is nice with great scenes from Mauerpark, clandestine raves, clubs which have moved from underground to establishment like Watergate and Tresor and lots of squatted houses.

We hear people like Michael Hain (Hardwax), Tobias Rapp (author and Spiegel journalist), Dixon, Dimitri Hegemann (Tresor founder), Bene and Tom (Renate club), Sascha (Apparat) or Daniel Meteo from Shitkatapult. The protagonists explain the history of the openness of Berlin after the wall came down with lots of space and lack of rules. And also its transition from being a German underground city to a internationally known hotspot with all the good and bad this development brings.

You can find more “real scenes” documentaries about Bristol and Detroit.

A full september

I haven’t written a long, diary-like blogpost for quite some time and here is a nice opportunity to reflect on what I am doing right now and what are my plans in september.

It all started with a weekend trip to Copenhagen, to see the exhibition opening of my friend Robert McNally. We had a great time, his gallery owner David showed us around and made us feel really welcome. The next day was strolling around in the center, the harbor, next to the opera, seeing Christiania and the sunday a trip to the famous Louisiana, museum of modern art with a beautiful sculpture garden. So lots of culture, impressions and great weather even!

This week will all about preparing new business for P3000 which I still enjoy working for every day. I am also helping to organize the main event of Social Media Week 2011, we are going to have a conference with the motto “Everything is amazing and nobody is happy”.

Next weekend I will work at Berlin festival, taking care of artists just like at Melt festival. I have amongst others Public Enemy, DJ Hell, Mr Oizo, Feadz, A Trak, Diplo, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Skrillex. Wow!

The week after will be Amsterdam at Picnic festival. I went there last year already and had a good time, here is the video from 2010.

I already have some interesting appointments in Amsterdam, obviously the idea of “The box” a european network of independent social media agencies does provoke some interest.

The week after will be Social Media week with the main event on tuesday and an app circus on thursday which I will take part in. Originally I planned to go to Cologne to Demexco too but I guess that’ll be too much frankly. Looking forward to seeing you on some of these events!

Was ist Crowdfunding? Wie lizensiere ich meine Musik für Filme?

Um Antworten bemüht sich ein ganzes Heer von Musik-Experten, darunter Stephan Benn, Rechtsanwalt und VUT-Vorstand, Artur Schock, Booker bei Audiolith, Tino Hanekamp vom Uebel + Gefährlich in Hamburg, oder Matthias Krebs von der UdK Berlin.
Checkt das gesamte Workshopprogramm.

Summer hit Doctor Dru & Adana Twins – Juicy Fruit

Summer hit? Who needs a summer hit? We all do, to remember, to dance into the sunset, on the top a roof, above the big city, especially with such a shit summer we have this year in Berlin. So this easy, discoy, kind-of-familiar-sounding thing is exactly what I would play at an open air summer party and that’s the moment when everybody would get into the groove, when the nice conversations start over the second cocktail, when the relaxing kicks in after some hard days of work. This is the kind of summer song we want and we need. This is what it is all about. Enjoy Doctor Dru & Adana Twins – Juicy Fruit in this video which let’s you wish you’d be there. Ok, I admit, it’s a bit cheesy, but “I like it”

Nahrungsmittelspekulation

Boiler Room

Boiler Room is a regular livestream from a very small club in London. They do a good job bringing interesting people in like Four Tête, James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Martyn, Theo Parrish, Jamie XX or Little Dragon who play their favorites and edgy tracks. It is watched and discussed simultaneously online and they have a nice podcast running.

I tuned into today’s (tuesday, 19/02/2011) show to listen into the Black Acre session with @bluedaisytwit, @FM_Fox and @Hyetalmusic. To sum it up: Interesting new sounds, I especially liked the Fantastic Mr Fox, cool to watch the musicians editing plus I really got this live feeling: seeing some people dancing in the background, watching the musicians, with a twitter stream, facebook and ustream chat boxes all around the video and people constantly writing stuff.

Mostly people write that they are there watching it, but sometimes also commenting the music, sharing links, tweeting to the bands. Who, and this makes the concept interesting, are mostly also on Twitter and get linked to by the boomboxtv account or by one of the founders and organizers Thristian Richards. But while most performers have accounts, only a few of them would check the discussion while doing music, I assume.

To be honest, there was no real discussion it was more the feeling to be watching the same stuff at the same time that made the experience interesting. And of course, the intimacy of being somehow at a living room party, like you can see in this video, Hudson Mohawke playing a 90ies classics Hip Hop set.

In a Time Out magazine article, Blaise Bellville, the other cofounder, talks about up to 25k viewers when James Blake was on, in this video interview Thristian Richards talks about the concept behind it. Richards is also a dj and Belville used to run “Platform”, a web magazine. It’s offline now, pointing to a new project called Leisure only but I found a nice readplatform.com snapshot from the Wayback machine.

The club is now located at Corsica studios, a small venue inside of railway arches near Elephant & Castle, maybe on their Facebook there is a chance to be invited to the actual performances.

Awesome grant for birdhouses

The second Awesome foundation grant this year goes to (drumroll..) Jay Cousins and his idea to build bird houses in the city! Here is a bit of his plan:

“Make a little birdhouse in your Keats” will show people how to make bird houses from trash and then place them in public spaces – trees, lamp-posts, street signs and buildings. This process will educate people about waste, and engage them directly in improving directly their urban environment. The birdhouses themselves will create a provocation, bring birdsong to the streets and make the keat’s just that little bit nicer for everyone in it. The project would manifest in workshops – street actions and documented online with a how to replicate in your own keats.

Awesome! We look forward to seeing this in action.

Again, I will be taking care of some artists, to my very pleasure, the ones I would have liked to see most as a visitor as well.
Stuxnet Visualization

Stuxnet is the most complex computer virus so far.

Was lernen wir daraus?

Why the bike lane is not always the safest place

A guy gets fined for not riding his bike on the bike lane and shows us in the video why it is actually dangerous to ride on the bike lane. I feel with that guy. Not only have I been fined by police once for that (at 4am, in Göttingen, on a totally empty street, 80 EUR!!!) I also happen to have had some bike accidents, including one where I was mislead (yes, mislead, not drunk or something, mislead!) by arrows on the street directing me directly into a metal barrier which was grey and thus hard to distinguish from the dark night. So I crashed into it and had my left hand stitched afterwards and wearing a cast for three weeks. So I feel with that guy, watch what happens when you take the bike lane.

Junior Boys It’s all true

I loved the other Junior Boys stuff, just like Metro area or Emperor machine. Easy, poppy, dubby, slightly discoish music with a little cool and distant flavour. Here you can listen through their new record “It’s all true”. Just found it on Hypemachine who, btw have an iPhone app now!

DJ together with turntable.fm

Great fun this thing, and one of these “Wow, internet!” moments: On turntable.fm you can enter a room and play songs to each other, like 5 djs playing back to back, and it’s designed like a little club. I just stumbled into a session by Numblog and this is what it looks like:

Hop behind the dj booth when there is a free space. You can search for tracks in a database and select it to your playlist. The djs play on from left to right and when you’re on, the song from top of your playlist is played next. Everybody in the room can click “awesome” and the avatar starts dancing. If enough people push “lame”, the next dj is on. Simple idea, well done, playful interface, like I said: great fun!

And there was this great moment also when one of he founders Seth Goldstein entered the room to see if everything was ok. We clapped his shoulder, congrats to turntable.fm, made some wishes (export playlist, real mixing) and let him step up to play one song. “Soldier” by DJ Cadim it was. Good luck, Seth and turntable.fm!

Thank you for showing me some music in a great session with Barbnerdy, Saetchmo, Silke, Fakir Ayonto, Uwe and others!

Next 2010 summary

Last week I attended the Next conference, here is a personal summary and some reflections. First and overall I really liked next11, it had a good atmosphere and creative feel, interesting audience and I sticky ideas to share.

Of course, the talks and encounters are the most important thing at such an event and it was really a shame I did not have time to talk and chat more with people. Station is a good location, the lectures where in different rooms that all left from a central hall that had the feel of a marketplace and also served as restaurant and party area.

Too bad also I did not take any pictures, the official Flickr does not have images that capture the atmosphere either. The photo is from t3n, who have many more pictures from next11.

The panels where diverse, the curators did a great job in my opinion this year. To my mind stuck the AKQA showcase with Ian Crocombe who e.g. talked about the Fiat Eco Drive, a car which comes with a software that analyzes the driving and suggests ways to consume less energy. Or Andrew Zolty by BreakfastNY with his twittering oven and the blimb who checks in to Foursquare automatically.

Vincent Schmidlin by Scholz & Friends talked about archetypical heroes in human narrations and how brands can be seen in such a way (Slideshare in German). And of course I enjoyed to see my friends Bastian by Jovoto who showcased the Betacup case and David from Soundcloud who had many examples of user love like this one:
Soundclouder of the day – Thankyou song by David Philips.

Here is David’s talk on Soundcloud.

Nextweb has a nice interview with the Startup pitch winner wahwah.fm and on Techcrunch Angry birds announce 200 Mio downloads. The videos from the conference should be up soon I guess. Thank you, next team!
My days at ADC 2011, this week Next

Last weekend I went to the German ADC festival in Frankfurt. The Art Directors club (ADC) awards good ideas and designs from the communications world, from tv ads to magazine design, there is a conference and of course many parties. My expectations were to meet interesting advertising people to talk about how to implement social media in their work and scout some young talents for P3000.

And I really did have some good conversations, everybody was really interested but somehow I had the feeling that there still are a lot of cultural differences between the advertising and the social media world. I’ll explain that in another post. What I actually did not expect so much was to be inspired, I don’t know why, but that actually happened to my joy and surprise. The exhibition was full of nice small and big design and advertising stuff: photos from magazines, print poster campaigns, even some good online stuff and I it was cool to stroll around and let the eye get caught by the vast variety. You can take a look at all the winners here and watch some picture after the break.

Next event I will be attending: Next 2011 I am particularly interested in Peter’s Social track and Nico’s branding day, to bad it’s simultaneous, so I’ll be hopping back and forth supposedly.

Testing the Starplayer app

Only two weeks ago, Heineken came out with the Starplayer iPhone app, which lets players estimate situations in Champions league football matches, while watching it on tv. I had the chance to test it from the beginning and I have to say it’s pretty impressive overall. The concept to run a game simultaneously to popular football games and let players worldwide play against each other is as simple as it is genius and the app is very well done. There are few things I did not like so much: 1st) I fail a lot, and I think I am not he only one, so it’s pretty difficult and on the edge on being demotivating. 2nd) it takes a lot of energy, the phone is almost empty after a match and 3rd) there are some minor usability flaws, like images that look clickable but aren’t. Here are some screenshots and explanations:

The first screen is the standard screen while a match is running. Before you have to logon, connect your social media accounts if you like and chose a match. If you think a goal is near you can push the bar at the bottom and gain lots of points if they really score within 30 seconds. The image to the right shows one of several questions that pop up during the game.

Corners and free kicks give you an extra chance to score (no screen unfortunately): Players decide whether it will be a goal, cleared, missed or caught by the keeper. At the end of the match of course you can share the result with your social media friends.

The impressive thing about the app is the real time factor. Not only must there be somebody to push in the live events like corners or goals but the technology must also be able to push these events to the players and collect inputs correctly, e.g. know if the player really selected a goal before it happened. The app was built by AKQA, the impact is evaluated by Blauw Research. Well done!

Deep88 feat The Huge – Italo82 (Disco Remix)

I like this video! It has a cool relaxed style, some nice city views, a pretty actress (Friederike Kempter) and I like disco, as you know.

The video has a very slim format and is shot entirely on the Canon EOS 550D which gives the whole thing a warm, photographic feel. Shooting with a Canon EOS comes into fashion now, the other day I was interviewed by a tv station team that used that technology, too. The music is easy, good for a summer evening.

Thanks for the tip, Deep88!

Next conference invites international bloggers to Data Love

The Next conference has managed for several years now to invite international speakers who are able to cast a little blink at the future of digital business, marketing and communication. The Next conference 2011 will take place this year on may 17th and 18th in Berlin, main subject will be “Data love” and the value created out of information. The Next makers would love to see more international bloggers at this conference, so this is a call to my friends from Barcelona, London, New York, Stockholm and now also South America to get over here to mingle with the European internet scene.

So Data love. What’s that about? Well, everybody loves data. Everybody wants to have them, store them, process them, recognize patterns in them. Apps love data, business models love data, small and big companies love data, even the government loves data! You love data, store your pictures in the cloud, copy music from your old computer to your new harddrive, backing up your files on a regular basis. For many people data have become more important that physical things, while travelling, I met many people who have been living for months with 5 shirts and 2 shorts but wouldn’t want to miss their music on the ipod, their books on the kindle and their facebook on their netbooks. DJs throw out their vinyl, listen to mp3s and happily enjoy the new found space.

But there are a lot of conflicts in this subject and unsolved problems, especially on the lines between organizations and individuals and the private and the public. Of course human related data can be especially interesting and valuable, like locations, relations, actions. But the question is: who does the data belong to? Is it my data because I caused it or is it somebody else’s because they recorded it? It’s an old problem of property when talking about relations. Is it my mail because I wrote and sent it to you or is it your mail because it was meant for you?

Most companies yet have no idea what to do with their data, I must assume. Apple, e.g. stores your locations in a file on the iPhone, nobody knows e.g. why. It just does. Because one day there could be a way to turn this data into a business model. Governments store an immense information about their citizens and would like to use it to prevent crimes, predict the future, plan better. Most people would have the opinion that despite all the data, governments pretty much fail in predicting the future and planning right.

So that’s the conflict line: Individuals feel uncomfortable knowing that a lot of information about them is stored somewhere, often under not especially secure circumstances and often to ends nobody knows yet. Is that a reason to avoid data and minimize the amount of data stored in general? That’s a principle privacy activists often claim to be the best way against surveillance and fraud, just don’t store any data at all. All the data lovers certainly won’t like this idea.

The truth, as always, will probably be in the middle. Most people would agree they like advertising that suits them better, products that have special features tailored to them or that just work better. On the other hand, people will get excluded from products and services, e.g. by location, gender, race. Is it fair to let somebody pay more for a health insurance e.g. because he is living in a poor neighborhood and has been proven not to leave that neighborhood often either, based on location tracking? It’s based on data, there’s a correlation, bad neighborhood, bad living habits, often sick, higher risk, it’s statistically proven, but is it fair? We think we know people by their data, but I think we don’t. Still, it’s a development, nobody will stop.

So, just scratching on the surface of this subject, I am looking forward to discussing this further, hearing about ideas about how to love data, what useful stuff to do with it. See you at Next 2011, hopefully!

Best of Re:publica 2011

I am strolling through the blog posts about this years re:publica and I must admit it feels really sad not having spent more time there than the lousy two hours I played at the closing party. I had just came home from my trip, I was sick (still am), I had to get back into work at P3000, I just could not go. Tuesday evening I very shortly shook some hands at the Collaboratory meetup, but no way to go to the conference, neither to the Twitter reading or the Google party at Clärchens Ballhaus, not on thursday, not to #tassebier, nor on friday, it’s a shame. Because the feel transmitted by the mood videos and all the enthusiastic and thoughtful posts really make me miss having seen all the people I really would have liked to meet.

Also I think I missed quite some input this year. I heard great stuff about bedroom programmers building maps to help disaster helpers, egyptian bloggers and of course the infamous Guten Tag Team (which apparently did a show so full of copyright infringements it will never be put online). Two great videos are already online and according to what’s been said, they are true #rp11 highlights. Sascha Lobo hilariously insulting the audience and the entire internet and the very nerdy and witty Guenter Dueck talking about the Internet as operating system.

Sascha Lobo – Trollforschung from Christian Cordes on Vimeo.

All linked content is in German, but I write in English, don’t know why, I guess I’m still in the mood.

As for the party: I’m sorry, I did not play good. I was not well prepared and did not really harmonize with Nilzenburgers hits. I should have just played some electro classics. Next year!!

Peru

After Buenos Aires, a little Chile in San Pedro de Atacama and my travels through Bolivia, I spent almost three weeks in Peru and I must say that it’s the country I liked most on my trip, for several reasons. First, it has a great variety of landscapes, from the Andes and the Highlands, the lake Titicaca, one of the biggest and highest lakes on earth (actually big enough for the Bolivians to have a marine inside their army, despite having any coastline) to the jungle around Iquitos and of course the beaches along the Pacific ocean. But the is not the only reason.

I had the pleasure to see all of these different nature environments, look for are only two of my Peru sets on Flickr.

My judgement is not based on nature alone, that would be unfair, since Ecuador and Colombia also have an incredible variety I unfortunately did not have the time to explore to the fullest. But what I also liked about Peru is the culture awareness and pride you find everywhere. Being the heart of the Inca Empire with Cusco as Inca capital and the cradle for many Indigenous cultures in Latin America, like the Moche and Nasca and many still vivid groups like Quechua, Aymara or Urus, Peru seems to have found a way of being proud of that heritage without feeling too bitter about the colonial history and the tragic destruction of heritage during the Spanish reign. And somehow it feels that the country is internally not as separated as it seems in Bolivia or Ecuador, where politicians, entrepreneurs and tv presenters are mainly white but the street population is mainly indigenous so you feel like you would still be in a colonized country. There seems to be a growing middle class consisting of Indigenous and mestizo people and the next president might be the leftist nationalist Ollanta Humala whose father is of Indigenous origin.

Third reason are the people. Most tend to be really friendly and helpful, and, as a paradox, gave me a lot of warnings about other ill-meaning Peruvians, including taxi drivers who repeatedly warned me about taxi drivers. I also had very educated and savy guides who did not only knew about sites and history but also recommended really great places to eat. Which leads me to the next reason to love Peru: The food.

Food in Peru has an incredible variety of ingredients and recipes, edging to a new cuisine which fuses traditional dishes with Asian (mixed with Chinese, the food is called “Chifa” e.g.) or European cooking. I was happy to have a lot of dishes from Ceviche, which is marinated fresh fish with onion and lemon, Anticuchos, which are grilled beef hearts, Rocoto Relleno, which are stuffed peppers or delicious soups. You can even have guinea pig which is a bit complicated since there is little meat and lots of bone. Typical dessert is sweet rice and a very interesting drink based on some kind of jelly served with lime and herbs, feels really good after eating a lot. And it’s not necessarily expensive, of course you have upscale restaurants but you can eat very very good for 3 EUR as a normal economic menu during the day.

So, I will try to sum up some more conclusions about my travel as my head feels filled with impressions and images and I hope some consistent stories about countries, people and little events might come out.

In Bolivia

In Bolivia, you can buy dynamite in the streets of Potosi. In Bolivia you can buy gallons of 95% alcohol and people drink it. In Bolivia, no house is built without burying a dead llama fetus in the foundation. In Bolivia, you pay a Boliviano to be allowed to shit in a hole. San Pedro Prison in La Paz is one of the most bizzare prisons of the world, for a fee to inmates, tourists would go to visit the prison, people grow marihuana inside and openly manufacture cocaine from coca leaves and one gang lord built a roof house on top of it once for him and his entourage. “Marching powder” is a great book about this prison.

If it rains heavily in La Paz, whole neighborhoods slide down.

In Potosi, several million people died in one single mine. Millions of black slaves were imported to Bolivia. They worked in the mines. Today, you hardly see any black person in the street.

Today, the mines do not look much different. Stuff is carried out in sacks in the back. If people are lucky, they have a trolley. The stone is cut by hand with a hammer. Many young men work here, 14, 15 years. They chew Coca all day so they don’t feel hunger, nor tiredness. They work hard and they are very proud but all want to quit some time. No miner lives long.

In Bolivian tv, evervbody looks European. On Bolivian streets, everbody looks indigenous. People shout the destinations of the buses, just like in other countries in South America. In Bolivia though, it sounds like they are crying. In Bolivia, there are fake police men. It’s a crazy country.

Du bist so müde.

Deine Glieder tun weh. Deine Knie tun weh.

New York

Ein richtig normaler, gemütlicher Brooklyn Abend also.

Was man eben so tut in New York.

10 tips to self when travelling

People who know me, also know that I can get easily distracted, a little naive and drifting sometimes. Which is quite ok if you walk around in your own neighborhood but can be even up to dangerous when you’re in a foreign environment. So the last days in New York where quite a good practice to put together a list to myself what to do when travelling since South America will be a bit more challenging. You might laugh at the advices or think they are trivial but they have been proven to be useful. At least for me. I am going to learn them by heart now. If you have any more suggestions, please put them in the comments!

1. Most important, but always done wrong: Don’t take more with you than absolutely necessary. You have to carry all the shit around and a shirt more or less can make a difference.

2. Put your stuff always in the same pockets so you know where to find it. And that something’s wrong when it’s not there.

3. Never put all the valuable stuff in one place so if get stolen or robbed, it’s not gone altogether. Always keep a dollar in your pocket, for tips and robbers.

4. Remember key features of your environment like shops or houses.

5. When riding a bus or the train, make sure you’re going in the right direction and you get off at the right station. Sounds easy. It’s not.

6. When entering a store or coffee shop, make sure which direction you came from so you know where to continue.

7. Turn around once in a while to see what the way looks like you came
from so you’ll recognize it coming from the other direction.

8. Information in emails is fine but useless when you cannot access it. Write the important stuff like telephone numbers, flight dates or addresses on paper.

9. When in need for some advice for the right way, ask women who could be your mum. In terms of age I mean. They will help you.

10. With all the caution it’s also ok to trust. Trust yourself, trust trustworthy people, trust your luck and fate.

Strolling in Brooklyn Bed-Stuy

Whilst being in New York, I have the great pleasure to stay with my friend Anna who is a photographer with a very warm-hearted eye for what makes people special. Her flat/studio is located in a former shoe factory, it’s very spacious, with lots of light falling in, the sun wakes me up in the morning. And besides letting me sleep on her couch she even teaches me some photography basics. That’s a good start for my trip, definitely!

The studio is in a part of Brooklyn which is called Bed-Stuy, since the streets Bedford and Stuyvesant kind of define it. It has some famous children, like Jay-Z or Mos Def and is traditionally a residential area. Currently, it’s in a state of change and many people claim it’s the most exciting and dynamic part of New York right now.

While Williamsburg, the part of Brooklyn which is right opposite to Manhattan, could be seen at the end of a development, Bed-Stuy might be at the beginning of it. Williamsburg has lived a tremendous change in the last 20 years with the typical mechanisms of gentrification. First came the artists, later the bars and cafes, the galleries, the fashion shops and all of a sudden the rents are expensive, tourists flood the streets and no young artist can afford to live there anymore.

Williamsburg right now is a prosperous and stylish neighborhood full of people and trendy shops, bars and clubs. In Bed-Stuy you see uninhabited houses with wood nailed to their doors, lots of trash laying around and Anna’s place is in a street which was called ‘crack alley’ only a few years ago. When I arrived yesterday, I did not really feel that comfortable. It was dark, the shops you could see around where mainly second hand furniture places or cheap restaurants that sell food over a counter secured with a plastic wall and people seemed to hang out in the street for no obvious reason, just because they didn’t have anything to do. It was impossible to find a bar to sit in and have a tea and a beer.

Now, two days later, I know that there are very nice places, I just didn’t know yet where. Despite the area being mainly rough, there are some nice coffee shops already and of course many creative people who use the space they could never afford in Williamsburg, not to talk about Manhattan.
Yesterday morning, I got to see the office of longform.org who do summaries of essays and reports in magazines like The New Yorker, Time magazine or GQ. They have a very fluffy cat and look forward to their launch party to promote the upcoming ipad app. Moreover, there are coffeshops like Choice or Outpost and bars like Tip Top where I hope to meet some friends tonight. Maybe we’ll be discussing to what extend Bed-Stuy can be compared to Williamsburg and if it’s really on a similar path.
