The Next conference has managed for several years now to invite international speakers who are able to cast a little blink at the future of digital business, marketing and communication. The Next conference 2011 will take place this year on may 17th and 18th in Berlin, main subject will be “Data love” and the value created out of information. The Next makers would love to see more international bloggers at this conference, so this is a call to my friends from Barcelona, London, New York, Stockholm and now also South America to get over here to mingle with the European internet scene.

So Data love. What’s that about? Well, everybody loves data. Everybody wants to have them, store them, process them, recognize patterns in them. Apps love data, business models love data, small and big companies love data, even the government loves data! You love data, store your pictures in the cloud, copy music from your old computer to your new harddrive, backing up your files on a regular basis. For many people data have become more important that physical things, while travelling, I met many people who have been living for months with 5 shirts and 2 shorts but wouldn’t want to miss their music on the ipod, their books on the kindle and their facebook on their netbooks. DJs throw out their vinyl, listen to mp3s and happily enjoy the new found space.

But there are a lot of conflicts in this subject and unsolved problems, especially on the lines between organizations and individuals and the private and the public. Of course human related data can be especially interesting and valuable, like locations, relations, actions. But the question is: who does the data belong to? Is it my data because I caused it or is it somebody else’s because they recorded it? It’s an old problem of property when talking about relations. Is it my mail because I wrote and sent it to you or is it your mail because it was meant for you?

Most companies yet have no idea what to do with their data, I must assume. Apple, e.g. stores your locations in a file on the iPhone, nobody knows e.g. why. It just does. Because one day there could be a way to turn this data into a business model. Governments store an immense information about their citizens and would like to use it to prevent crimes, predict the future, plan better. Most people would have the opinion that despite all the data, governments pretty much fail in predicting the future and planning right.

So that’s the conflict line: Individuals feel uncomfortable knowing that a lot of information about them is stored somewhere, often under not especially secure circumstances and often to ends nobody knows yet. Is that a reason to avoid data and minimize the amount of data stored in general? That’s a principle privacy activists often claim to be the best way against surveillance and fraud, just don’t store any data at all. All the data lovers certainly won’t like this idea.

The truth, as always, will probably be in the middle. Most people would agree they like advertising that suits them better, products that have special features tailored to them or that just work better. On the other hand, people will get excluded from products and services, e.g. by location, gender, race. Is it fair to let somebody pay more for a health insurance e.g. because he is living in a poor neighborhood and has been proven not to leave that neighborhood often either, based on location tracking? It’s based on data, there’s a correlation, bad neighborhood, bad living habits, often sick, higher risk, it’s statistically proven, but is it fair? We think we know people by their data, but I think we don’t. Still, it’s a development, nobody will stop.

So, just scratching on the surface of this subject, I am looking forward to discussing this further, hearing about ideas about how to love data, what useful stuff to do with it. See you at Next 2011, hopefully!

I am strolling through the blog posts about this years re:publica and I must admit it feels really sad not having spent more time there than the lousy two hours I played at the closing party. I had just came home from my trip, I was sick (still am), I had to get back into work at P3000, I just could not go. Tuesday evening I very shortly shook some hands at the Collaboratory meetup, but no way to go to the conference, neither to the Twitter reading or the Google party at Clärchens Ballhaus, not on thursday, not to #tassebier, nor on friday, it’s a shame. Because the feel transmitted by the mood videos and all the enthusiastic and thoughtful posts really make me miss having seen all the people I really would have liked to meet.

Also I think I missed quite some input this year. I heard great stuff about bedroom programmers building maps to help disaster helpers, egyptian bloggers and of course the infamous Guten Tag Team (which apparently did a show so full of copyright infringements it will never be put online). Two great videos are already online and according to what’s been said, they are true #rp11 highlights. Sascha Lobo hilariously insulting the audience and the entire internet and the very nerdy and witty Guenter Dueck talking about the Internet as operating system.

All linked content is in German, but I write in English, don’t know why, I guess I’m still in the mood.

As for the party: I’m sorry, I did not play good. I was not well prepared and did not really harmonize with Nilzenburgers hits. I should have just played some electro classics. Next year!!

Oder was Schlechtes?

Euch gehts doch super!” Interessant auch die Reaktionen, als ich mich in Thailand nicht mehr als Deutscher (auf die unvermeidliche Frage “Where you’re from?!”) sondern als Schweizer vorstellte. Super angenehm!

Reflecting on the subject of this years motto of Next Conference, “Share economy” I would like to “share” some thoughts here.

First thought, naturally, is that an economy model based on money as the prime medium of an economic sphere will not create value by sharing. Luck, love or fun are things that grow when you share, money is not. If I share my Euro with you, I have less, of course, you have more, but it does not grow. But Certainly, there is only one way to gain money from sharing: If you provide an infrastructure for sharing which can be monetized. This is the second point – the microeconomic view from the point of a company or individual.

Most prominent example are ISPs (internet service providers). Napster, Gnutella or torrents were main drivers for growth in broadband internet contracts. Next prominent are sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter who “enable people to share” (Zuckerberg) – they also provide the infrastructure for sharing. Apart from the relationships and the people’s attention, here, it is not clear yet how to monetize the said infrastructure.

Still, there is a third way of regarding a share economy: A macroeconomic view that takes effects for the whole economy into account that are based on sharing. Maybe this is the most powerful effect, sharing can have on an economy, even if you only take the moneysphere into account. For economic growth, a society needs innovation. Innovation needs ideas and ideas never develop independently but are always a mashup of the existing in a new way. The more people share thoughts ideas, the more likely is the emergence of innovation.

So, to sum things up: Yes, there can be a share economy. Most likely if you do not measure in money but in other terms, like fun or joy. In the traditional, micro-economic way, most likely if you, as an organization provide an infrastructure for sharing. And third, on a macroeconomic level, for a society because sharing enables innovation and thus economic growth.

First, you can get an overview of all articles published on the DLD live blog here.

After three days of intense blogging, live blogging(!), there should be a little resumée. Must be a personal one, naturally, although I aim to grasp some of that spirit hopefully many people sensed in these days of Digital, Life, Design 09.

In the position of being confronted with so many ideas, witted people, diverse subjects, opinions, trends and conversations I felt intectually challenged almost all the time. Plus, trying to find my own “art of live blogging” I was in a constant state of concentration, in search of the essence of the panels I focused on to cover. Now I feel tired and inspired, with the “Black swan” beside my bed and “What would Google do” on my desk. And with many images still in mind that make it hard just to say “DLD was awesome!”. But it certainly was.

We had economics, design, psychology, neurobiology, architecture, technology, education, fashion, music.. DLD was so diverse and at the same time deep in concern of the arguments of the people and mostly entertaining by the performance. And this inspirationally broad deepness certainly had effects on the talks in the hallway which I personal did not have. Because I had to blog. Because I was honoured to blog!

My thanks go to the whole team, all those fast and motivated people who made this conference so smooth, so you would not notice the organization, just the flow. And especially to my blogger colleagues Nicole, Oliver and Andrea. We came up with some nice techniques to cover people’s talk with live writing which include Google Docs, hand signs, twitter search, mobile photo uploads and the help of people who plug the laptops, know about details, give comments.
So thank you all, team, speakers, participants and especially to the cute coffee machine in the team room.

Before I go and polish my posts and clean up all the typos, here are my personal Top9::

9. With the Zuckerberg appearance I found the controversial twitter conversation as interesting as what was said on stage.

I had this idea when I realized how many people twitter about what they are watching on tv right now. Taking a look at my German twitter friends on a sunday night, be sure, almost half of them will comment on the ongoing “Tatort”. But in contrast to stuff from the web, tv shows cannot be linked to directly. Of course, there are pages from tv channels, YouTube videos or blogentries, but there is clearly no distinct system to link to tv shows.

This is a gap to be filled, maybe it is THE gap to be filled for the two systems to grow together. We need URLs for tv shows.

How can this be done? Here is just an idea, feel free to discuss it, take it, rework it and implement it.

First we need a system for creating a unique link. That should not be difficult:
http://[countrydomain].[servicename, tbd.].net/[tvchannelname]/[tvshowname]/[additionalinformation]/[date]/[starttimeasdefinedbythechannel]

Second part is not so easy: What happens when this URL is used:
1. If there’s a lifestream ask if the user wants to open it – open it or
2. Show search results for
- flash videos
- mpg, mov, avi etc formats
- torrents
- text
3. Let user flag, submit errors, comment

I know that there needs to be a heavy algorhythm behind, hopefully some day building on microformats that mark tv shows on websites as events with title, tvchannel and the necessary date and time data. Semantic web in use, not?

Yesterday, I attended the ceremony of Deutsche Welle to award the Best of Blogs (theBOBS) which, according to the jury, are the best blogs in different national categories, as well as in video and audio in 2009.

Peter aka thewavingcat blogged live with a very fascinating tool called Coveritlive. It has a very smooth editor surface to write, comment and adjust stuff and codes which can be embedded in other websites where your twitterlike short news are flowing in and can be commented. He worked really hard in typing down the many informations from the stage, approving comments AND answering questions from a worldwide crowd. Respect! Also, Stefanie Suren and Andreas Schepers did a good job in guiding the audience through the evening with a plimpse of Hollywood feel: “And the winner is..!”

Was there too much show and glam and too little seriousness? Especially taking into account that e.g. the Chinese jury member was not allowed to travel to Germany or Cédric Kalonji from Kongo talked about war and repressions in his country? That less jury members and more bloggers should be invited? Yes and no I’d say. All of the blogs represent the myriad stories that take place every day, happening to all of us. Impossible to do justice on every unrighteousness touched yesterday. Plus: At least here in Berlin, while celebrating blogs as a great thing everybody should have some fun. But: More unknown bloggers on stage please, maybe jury memebers could be represented with video statements and instead the winners be invited.

Overall, it was a very nice event, not to crowded but packed with interesting people from all over the world. The decisions of the jury can, like all personal decisions, be questioned to if they really picked the best blogs but it was certainly a selection of honest, liberal thinking writers with loyal readers who write from their hearts and represent a voice for the people, often in countries where “the people” do not really have a voice.

Ich will dazu was ganz anderes sagen: Ich traue inzwischen überhaupt keinem Geheimdienst mehr. Punkt.”

Ich will dazu was ganz anderes sagen: Ich traue inzwischen überhaupt keinem Geheimdienst mehr. Punkt.”

Examples for logos with descending dots, taken from Logolounge

Vivid logos were found by the logo blog: An example for a vivid logo,
taken from Logoblog

A chiseled structure becoming alive is the London 2012 brand that was revealed yesterday. An image movie shows how the logo becomes part of the environment and while the aesthetics of the logo are a matter of taste and I think the idea is pretty unusual and, ehm, edgy, the movie is kind of scary.
London Olypmpics 2012 logo
It might represent the competitive character of the games and the fight to find the best. It might also visualize the mental effects of doping, who knows.

For those of you who enjoy a little wordplay from time to time and are fascinated by German zusammengesetzte Hauptwörter (Mark Twain loved them too, read his masterpiece “The awful German language“) here’s a little thought:

German composed swear words don’t sound so mean anymore if you just interchange the two main vocals, actually, they sound quite cute.
Some examples.
Schwunzlatscher – Pessnilke – Sickgesacht (haha, reminds me of Bastian Sick) and Flichwachser. Hey, here’s one that get’s even stronger: Wurmdascher!

Saidly enough, it doesn’t work with Flachzange, Vollpfosten or Kackbratze.
Any more creative ideas here?

Sounds complicated? Here’s an example: Play golf not by pressing buttons but by moving the controller as if you had a golf club in your hand. Same goes for bowling, boxing, tennis or the popular game Zelda.

I had the chance to test this new product because I was invited to the Berlin based Wii-Crib, a lounge with sofas, big tvs and two Wii stations. Although I have never been much of a gamer I was fascinated by this. I recorded some movies myself but they are of crappy quality so I use the generously provided corporate material by Nintendo below. Trnd has a video from the Berlin Wii crib (in German) as well.

It is displayed in the picture beside, who finds out what the name is, wins an invitation to the Berlin crib! So, write me an email with your answer!

Imagine taking a walk with your date, down “Unter den Linden” to the Dome and the Old National Gallery, all iluminated in different moods, sitting down on some bench with a paper cup of tea in your hands. This should put you in the right atmosphere for getting to know each other..

You enter and feel comfortable immediately. It is generously spacious, has lots of sofas and cushions, hand written menus on chalkboards and many little lamps. People sit and work creatively with their laptops and get to know each other due to the open architecture, and talk life, politics and projects. For instance: We met an archeologist there who was on the first American team to explore the Ucraine after the cold war.

One of the most amazing media installations ever was “Blinkenlights” in Berlin 2002. I just found the documentation video via their podcast. You must watch it, it kicks you off your feet!

The hacker commmunity Chaos Computer Club (CCC) used the abandoned skyscraper “Haus des Lehrers” on Alexanderplatz to turn the windows facade into a gigantic monochromatic screen. Over 8 floors with 144 spot lights formed this huge interactive display that could be seen even hundreds of metres from above.

The lights were controlled by three computers that turned them on and off. Like that the big screen could be animated in a very simple way. People sent commands in form of textfiles via email to the controlling computers, many of them were loveletters. These could be activated by a sms-code in the very moment the two were on Alexanderplatz.

The topof bringing interactivity into the massive multimedia installation was the option to play the old arcade game “Pong”. Mobile phones were used as controllers that influenced the lights in real time.

The animated gif I used is “Der Fußballer” by Henning

Wish me luck!

Tuesday, 11 o´clock, Café Napoljonska, Kastanienallee, Berlin. They have the best cakes, cookies and ice cream.

I like to sit there and work and watch the people pass by and drink coffee and read the newspapers. Sounds like leisure but actually I had some of my most productive hours there..

I have seen them several times, the “Brothers in music”. It’s just the type of minimal deep tech house music I love. Flirry, minimal, a little melancholic and driving. Check out their beautiful website Brothers-in-music.de
They just released a 4 Track EP, you can listen to the tracks and download live mp3s. I read about it because they released the EP under a Creative Commons license.

To the knowledge of Netzpolitik it is the first vinyl record with a CC license. I guess, it won’t be the last.
