Why the bike lane is not always the safest place

A guy gets fined for not riding his bike on the bike lane and shows us in the video why it is actually dangerous to ride on the bike lane. I feel with that guy. Not only have I been fined by police once for that (at 4am, in Göttingen, on a totally empty street, 80 EUR!!!) I also happen to have had some bike accidents, including one where I was mislead (yes, mislead, not drunk or something, mislead!) by arrows on the street directing me directly into a metal barrier which was grey and thus hard to distinguish from the dark night. So I crashed into it and had my left hand stitched afterwards and wearing a cast for three weeks. So I feel with that guy, watch what happens when you take the bike lane.

Jetzt wird gerätselt! Gesucht wird ein Bild in den Weiten des Internets. Jeden Tag erscheint dazu in einem anderen Blog ein Beitrag mit einem Hinweis. Augmented Reality concert on a snack bag

Doritos teamed up with several agencies (e.g. Mekanism and Proto) and Blink182 to present a concert on a snacks bag. In fall 2009, on www.doritoslatenight.com you could hold a marker printed on a Doritos bag into the webcam connected to a flash app that would recognize that code and put a concert video by Blink182 filmed in a green screen room into the virtual space. You could than turn the bag and thus control the perspective of the video. Great brand transfer and well done technology of “musicians in your palm”.

Fashionweek Berlin 09 Rückblick

Als normaler Hauptstadtbewohner merkt man es kaum, höchstens wenn einmal ein schön gebrandeter Shuttle-Mercedes vorbei fährt oder der Mitbewohner mit prall gefüllten Taschen von der Bernhard Willem Show im Postbahnhof zurück kommt: Die Fashionweek war die letzten Tage in vollem Gang und neigt sich heute ihrem Ende zu. Zeit für einen kleinen Rückblick. (Bild von m.ariii)

Mode ist wichtig in Berlin, gerade weil es hier so viele kleine Designer in Ladenlokalen gibt, die hinten schneidern und vorne verkaufen und sich daraus neben Kunst, Musik und Film eine wichtige Facette der Berliner Kreativität ergibt. Bei Zoomer gibt es einen schönen Film über so ein junges Berliner Label, Berlin Illustrated (Berlin Illustrated).

Veranstaltungen wie die Fashion Week inklusive der Messe Premium und die jüngst nach Berlin zurückgekehrte Bread&Butter (die dies gemeinerweise direkt zum Start der Fashion Week erklärte, wie ein eifersüchtiges Model, das dem anderen die Show stehlen möchte) werfen dabei immer wieder internationale Schlaglichter auf die Szene. Sie vereinen Kreativität und Geschäft, die großen Namen wie Boss, Joop und Michalsky sonnen sich im Lichte der umtriebigen Berliner Szene und einigen kleinen Berliner Labels gelingt es, Distributionsdeals abzuschließen, um ihre Werke auch außerhalb Berlins vertreiben zu können.

Und auch wenn man auf keiner Veranstaltung war kann man im Internet eine schöne Bandbreite an Berichten von der Fashionweek finden, inklusive der so wichtigen Bilder und Videos. Hier eine kleine Auswahl:

Los gings am Mittwoch abend mit der Boss Show im Tropenhaus des Botanischen Gartens. Am Donnerstag mittag gab es dann die Show von La La Berlin, von der Mister Spex ein paar Brillenbilder gemacht hat. Fotos von der Show gibt es natürlich auch und zwar bei Lea Loves. Abends die laut Bild “skandalöse” Kaviar Gauche Show mit viel Haut, hautfarbenen Strumpfhosen, Fransen und natürlich Taschen.

Freitag abend haben es die Modebloggerinnen von Les Mads dann trotz Blogger-Aversität der Michalsky Pressechefin doch auf die exklusive Michalsky-Show geschafft und am Samstag war dann die bereits eingangs erwähnte Show von Bernhard Wilhelm im Postbahnhof, auf der die ausschließlich männlichen Models in Skianzügen zwischen Theaterlandschaften herumstehen und Faxen machen mussten. Ein durchaus heiterer Abschluss der Fashionweek mit Mode, die sich ausnahmsweise mal nicht so ernst nimmt.

Café Solvey

For the most time I have been in my current flat, the little store in the ground floor was filled with a computer store. The guys where nice, even had some hints for me from time to time but obviously they did not suceed with their business and closed last year. Some months later people started to build a café there. This was of great delight to us since we have many bars in our neighborhood but no nice cafés to sit and read newspapers.

In september, Café Solvey opened finally and we instantly became friends with Solvey and her family who run the place. It’s warm and cosy, with very old porcelain, self-made cake, soft armchairs, a kids corner with toys and a fake, yet very well done chemin. And when Solvey asked me to help her out with a website I could not say no. Jimdo was the system of choice to build it fast and easy and when I see now that Solvey herself (who is not a big fan of these “computer things”) edits the events on her page and adds products, I know it was the right decision – Jimdo obviously easy to use. And I earned myself a couple of coffees, breakfasts and cakes!

Greenhouse.sproutbuilder.com is an absolute blast. It’s a flash based widget builder which works entirely in your browser window and has a lot of editing features. Build sites with text, video, pictures, slideshows, maps, charts or insert RSS. Define size, fonts, colors, background, effects. Here are the most recent updates from the PANORAMA3000 blog in a widget, it took me 20 minutes to make it nice.

Berlin Webweek begins

The city is always crowded, especially on weekends but this time there will be internetsters from all over the world coming to Berlin to celebrate the “Berlin Web Week”. Just like on Sonar, many events have gathered around the Web 2.0 Expo taking place next week in Berlin.

Wednesday night, the week started with a little drinkunp organized by the Web 2.0 Expo staff, Lifestream.fm and Mister Wong (thank you Janetti and Jodi!). This morning we had a nice Likemind at Oberholz, PANORAMA3000 and The waving cat had invited people to drink coffee and start the last day of the week smoothly.

This weekend is also Barcamp Berlin where people come together spontaneously to interact – everybody should be involved and take part actively, of course one main subject is the internet, but it also hits science, politics, business. Tonight there is a warm up party at Al Hamra, tomorrow and sunday is the camp and numerous parties and get-togethers.

This weekend: Videoakt, Substance, Mediaspree

This weekend in Berlin will see art, music, politics and overall a mashup of all: Friday night will see Substance, the biggest Dubstep party on the European continent so far, at Berghain, there is the big art festival Videoakt on friday and saturday where Stylewalker’s going to spin, and on sunday people living in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg have the chance to cast their votes for or against the urban development project Mediaspree.

Substance

Berghain, Berlin’s most famous techno temple and house of the Panorama Bar, will open it’s gates on a friday night for the first time (usually it’s only Panorama Bar on fridays) to host probably the biggest Dubstep party on the European continent so far: Shackleton, Scuba, Appleblim, Skull disco, Mala, DJ Distance – find more about the artists, links and music at Grimetime.

Moreover, you have the chance to enjoy Berhain’s new sound system: Funktion One. Paulie at Dubstepforum says about it: “It’s got the best sound I’ve ever heard in a big club. Funktion 1 rigs all the way round… ”

Videoakt
Videoakt is a video art festival hosted by the organization GlogauAIR, a non profit organization founded with the intention of creating a meeting point between different artistic disciplines, important is their Artist in Residence Programme, lots of international artists, e.g. from South America live and work there.

Me, Stylewalker, have the big honour to create a musical scape for the video art, together with Steve (remember the House party, almost three years ago?) and VJ Hitektrash from 11pm, at Glogauer 16.

Mediaspree

Betterplace.org – ein Social Network mit gesellschaftlichem Engagement

Überall wird über Kaioo geredet, eine Online-Community, die, wenn sie erstmal richtig brummt, ihre Werbeerlöse, nach Abzüge der Kosten und aufgeschlüsselt nach einem recht simplen zehn-Gewinner-take-it-all-Votingprinzip an gemeinnützige Organisationen verteilt. Das Ding kriegt massig Presse, zwei Ex-Bertelsmann-Manager sitzen im Vorstand und alle freuen sich, dass es nun eine “echte soziale Community” gebe.

Dabei ist das völliger Quatsch und nicht nur der Spiegel ist dieser frechen Aussage prompt aufgesessen. Sogar eigentlich doch recht gut informierte Start-up-Blogs wie Zweinull, Blognation (Update: Sorry, ebenso, wie ich es beim Werbeblogger übersehen hatte, war mir auch nicht aufgefallen, dass ebenfalls Blognation schon über Betterplace geschrieben hatte) oder Gründernet lassen sich dazu hinreißen, den Claim unkritisch zu übernehmen, viele andere Blogs wie z.B. Werbeblogger folgen.

Dabei gibt es längst eine tatsächlich soziale Community, die den Gemeinnutzgedanken nicht nur als PR-Flagge vor sich herträgt und den Rest lediglich genau wie Facebook, Myspace und Co. aufzieht. Betterplace.org dreht sich nämlich per se um soziales Engagement und bringt Projektverantwortliche aus aller Welt mit Unterstützern (die mit Geld, Zeit oder Know-How helfen) zusammen, die laufend über den Fortgang des Projektes informiert werden. Freundesverknüpfungen sorgen für Vertrauensnetzwerke und machen neue Projekte bekannt.

Nicht, dass ich die Kaioo-Idee per se schlecht finde. Aber mich stört diese Monstranz des “echten Sozialen” – denn das sollte doch wirklich etwas tiefer gehen, als Klingeltöne vermarkten und dann dem Roten Kreuz drei Euro überweisen.

Und nebenbei fällt auf, dass Watchberlin nochmal ordentlich zugelegt hat, was User Experience, Interface und Surface und Underface-Design angeht. Mit anderen Worten, es flutscht und läuft und funktioniert (fast) alles. Hut ab.

Update: Sowas, Watchberlin kommen nicht klar, erst hab ich ein hässliches De-Bug-Fenster auf meinem Blog und dann statt Broder Friedman im Film. Schade.

Simone Schlindwein, Spiegel-Korrespondentin in Moskau bloggt ausgiebig und anschaulich. Unbedingt regelmäßig lesen: Russland im Spiegelbild.

Sehr schön ist ihr Survival-Trainer für Moskau: Laut diesem sind es gar nicht so sehr die “Tschekisten, Terroristen, Extremisten, Putinisten, ehemaligen Kommunisten, Bolschewisten und all die anderen -Isten”, die Gefahr für Leib und Leben darstellen, sondern vielmehr Pfützen, die so tief sind, dass man darin ertrinken kann, schnappende Metroschranken, rasenden Rolltreppen, keifende Straßenköter, fünf bis sechs Hinterhöfe und Ampeln in drei Kilometern Entfernung und daraus folgenden Mittelstreckensprints über die xspurigen Straßen.

Matthias (Jimdo) at Robert Scoble’s show

Eine nette Geschichte, die sich die PR-Firma Euromarcom für die Schüler Community Breakster ausgedacht hat: Bill Kaulitz, Sänger von Tokyo Hotel sei dort angeblich anonym unterwegs, aber an der Stimme erkannt worden! Stimme? Genau, und gleich wurde noch die Nachricht untergebracht, dass Breakster auch kostenloses VoIP zwischen Gruppenmitgliedern ermöglicht.

Schließlich wird noch auf die Betreiberfirma Smeet verlinkt. Dumm nur, dass dafür die Domain smeets.de verwendet wurde – ein Unternehmen, das Luftreinigungstechnologie herstellt. Nicht grade ein PR-Gau, aber doch ein witziges Versehen.

Flickr-Alternatives

Yahoo und seine Produkte machen sich wirklich nicht besonders beliebt in letzter Zeit. Der Streit um die Zensur bei Flickr, die heftigen Reaktionen der Leser auf die Yahoo-Werbung in Adical-Blogs, immer wieder mit dem Verweis auf die Enthüllung von Regimekritikern in China und nun auch noch das Löschen von Hinweisen auf Open Source Produkte in Yahoo-Foren.

Flickr ist ja an sich ein gutes Produkt, aber wie schon bei Telepolis schön erläutert ist das wahre Asset das persönliche Netzwerk, das man sich in den Netzwerken schafft. Tja, wieviel das wirklich wert ist, ist sicher individuell verschieden. Wer sich für Alternativen zu Flickr interessiert, sollte sich mal Ipernity und 23hq anschauen. Ich habe auch noch 5 Codes für den plus Modus zu verschenken. Bitte Bescheid sagen, wer einen haben möchte.

HoeBot und LoveBot von StudiVZ

HoebotAlso, ich hab die beiden jetzt schon so vielen Leuten gezeigt, es wird Zeit, dass ich die mal verlinke: Die Geschichten von Hoe Bot und Love Bot, zwei nicht unsympathische Roboter, die eine Weile auf StudiVZ unterwegs waren.

Papermint: The Austrian alternative to Second Life

Papermint ScreenshotThe description could be even more specific: Papermint is in fact Vienna’s alternative to Second Life. The “3D virtual realities design company” Avaloop is creating a virtual Vienna, comicstyle; funny enough, Papermint will be 2D and has a very special look and feel.

Avatars look like little superheroes, very cute and indvidual. Right now, they are betatesting Papermint, I am curious how it will look like in the end. Unlike SL they want to concentrate on the communicative aspects of such worlds and not render reality. It is meant to be simple and easy to start. It did cost about 300 000€ devoloping, which shall be refinanced by user fees, in-game items and in-game advertising.

Jimdo rocks

Nachdem ich einigen Leuten in letzter Zeit das tolle, kostenlose Content Management System Jimdo empfohlen haben, will ich auch diese bescheidene Plattform nutzen, um über dieses wertvolle Tool zu berichten. Jimdo bietet einen ganzen Katalog von Funktionen, Layouts und Einstellungen um ratz-fatz eine Webseite zu erstellen. Navigation, Header, Gästebuch, Bildergalerie mit Slideshow inklusive Upload – ein schönes Bouquet an Seitentypen, mit dem sich schnell eine umfangreiche Seite bauen lässt. Auch RSS-Feeds, Flickr-Galerien und Videos lassen sich einfach einbauen. Im Textmodus hat man Zugriff auf den Quellcode und kann sogar noch weitere Widgets in die Seiten basteln. Das Ganze ist schnell und selbsterklärend, alles funktioniert kontextsensitiv und sollte sich auch webunaffinen Menschen schnell erschließen. Ein paar Textads werden in die Seiten eingebaut, für 5€ pro Monat kann man auf eine werbefreie Pro-version upgraden, die dazu noch weitere Features, wie z.B. mehr Speicher, beinhaltet.

Als ich letztes Wochenende auf einer Mitarbeiterkonferenz vorschlug, die Ergebnisse doch als Website zu veröffentlichen, waren die Reaktionen zunächst zweifelnd bis ablehnend (“viel zu aufwendig”) und das Erstaunen groß, als am Ende ein richtiges Onlinemagazin “echt im Netz” stand. Die Macher kommen aus Hamburg und treten sehr sympathisch auf, ich wünsche ihnen alles Gute!

Beatportplayer

Beatport, probably the world’s leading online store for club and electronic music has developed a great tool: The Beatportplayer which generates a code you can put into websites to play track snippets according to certain criteria.

Here’s an example for the recently issued tunes in the deep-house genre. Nice toy and great viral marketing, just like De:bug states.

JoinR and Kitchen Beatbox

JoinR is a new social network which has an intriguing surface, very ajaxy, you can play with boxes and mash up your profile. Let’s see who’ll be hanging out there. Check it out: Joinr.de. I, of course am stylewalker.joinr.de, but have no fancy profile yet.
Note: It’s early beta and obviously aimed at younger people (I feel old).

And here you’ll see UK’s master of the mouthmade beats, Maité, playing around with some kitchenwear and sounds á la “Memphs Soul Stew”.

Berlinale, Schlämmer, Vanity Fair, Agnes Obel

Wow, only a few posts and already there’s a war around my writing on the Berlinaleblog (Watch more pictures and read the whole story about how I sneaked into the big gala night).

This campaign is maybe the best blog / brand / personality campaign so far in Germany: Schlämmerblog, branded entertainment.

German bloggers are tough on the recently issued German Vanity Fair and critizise the big gap between pretension and reality, some even rip it apart visually.

Check out Agnes Obel on Myspace – beautiful dreamy and elegant music from Kopenhagen.

If you can laugh about Kopozky you have become someone who might spend too much time with the internet, codes, scripts, servers, accessibilty, webdesign, exhausting customers and online business. I think it’s damn funny!

Take a look at these sympathetic protagonists of this nicely drawn comics. They all seem to have a real correspondent since they depict the employees of Kopozky’s little IT company.

Turn the volume up and lets ride. Big sounds, brilliant graphics, a storyline and intelligent additional information. Since I never would be able to afford such a thing I cannot feel betrayed by the advertising and link to this masterpiece of webdesign: Audi R8 Microsite. I am still trying to find out who built it. Ideas, anyone?

Videopodcasts done by prominent bloggers and charismatic heads from the internetscene have been popping up recently (like the one I referred to yesterday) and here’s a little top 4 of what I think is worth watching.

Robert Scoble started a videoblog with interviewing Jonathan Schwartz, Sun’s CEO

www.gruenderszene.de is a german videocast by one of the Spreadshirt founders Lukasz Gadowski focussing on German entrepreneurs like Stefan Glänzer (Last FM), Jürgen Kluge (Head of McKinsey Germany) and Thomas Knüwer (Handelsblatt). Unfortunately pretty bad quality in picture and sound and sometimes a little unispired interviewer, yet very interesting people.

@xolo.tv has interviews with interesting people from all over the world and has really good editing.

Systemtheoretiker und Konstruktivisten aufgepasst! Wenn wir die Welt nur durchs beobachten konstruieren (Matrix und so, vielleicht sind wir ja alle angeschlossen und keiner merkts, you know), dann ist das eine Beobachtung erster Ordnung, right? Wenn wir durch Medien wie TV oder Blogs die Welt beobachten, dann ist das wohl eine Beobachtung zweiter Ordnung.

Wenn Tita von Hardenberg, die eine eigene TV-Sendung hat, sich und Harald Schmidt mit der Kamera beobachtet und wir sie dann später auf ihrem Blog dabei beobachten, ja welche Beobachtungsordnung haben wir denn dann? Die Medien beobachten die Medien, wir beobachten die Medien und dabei die Welt und uns selbst. Mein Gott, als Systemtheoretiker muss man doch irgendwann wahnsinnig werden..

It took me some time to figure out how to make the random header plugin work with my wordpress pool theme. Now I got it! Thx to Valentin and Pit also! You can now enjoy a new shiny header (the one on top) picture with every reload which also symbolizes Stylewalker being in Berlin now. What do you think? Does it work properly on your screen? Especially Safari and Mac IE users, tell me please!

Definetely hedonistic, definetely dirty (not really sfw), definitely full of life. Reminds of the Cobra Snake and apparently Bronques, the head behind the site has been dancing at Cobra Snake parties.

Hype machine is a live aggregator for music linked from blogs. With the inbuilt player it’s like playing global blogmusic-charts.

I could experience how much blogs might be on the vanguard of a global search for hot cool music by myself this morning. I blogged about Wax Tailor and his great song “Qué sera” in April. This morning, finally, I heard the song on the radio.

World cup stuff – I’m a Berlinizer!

I am exited. Today finally is the world cup kick off, world cup mania in Germany, a unique experience. Especially in Berlin, we expect many, many people, hopefully a lot of sun and we want to be hospital and helpful and just have a good time all together.

“Berlinizers” is a campaign to make Berlin citizens visisible that are willing to help guests get along in our city. Make a short test on Berlinizer.com and they’ll give you a pin to display you are a Berlinizer. I just got one in Spanish! And I liked the Berlinizer song by Culcha Candela so much, it’s now even my ringtone.

Now you can, with some überstylish football simulation: The Netzkicker. It’s easy, effective and fun, the most straight forward football simulation I have seen on the net. (And I have seen many: Yahoo has one, Intel tried it and RTL, too).
Run with the mouse, kick with a click. It’s still Beta, so handle it gently..

The netzkicker is realized and maintained by the online communications agency Face2net which I work for.

Futureboogie is an online platform by guys who are really fans of Jazzanova, Compost, Sonar Kollektiv and Ninja Tunes. Just like Stylewalker.

Gnarls Barkley – Listen today!

Gnarls Barkley are DJ Dangermouse (remember the grey album – most downloaded music in history) and singer Cee-Lo who just made history with the first UK number 1 hit that was based on online sales alone.

From today until sunday you can listen to their album “St Elsewhere” on their MySpace-site. Album release is the 5th of may. What a hype! But: Cool music: funky, techy, souly and defintely Stylewalker-approved.

Danger Mouse is a workaholic. In between he produced the Gorillaz-album and among others an album with MC Jemini. Listen to a legendary interview on Radio One.

Ricard Marxer Piñón is an artist who combines the mathematics of signal processing with the esthetics of font, fotos and sound. On a highly abstract level he e.g. uses reduced letters to create new shapes out of words.

The animation on the right side is a processed picture of burning gas in a glass. He is also working with the (to me, until now, unknown) programming language Processing I recommend his highly entertaining website ricardmarxer.com.

I got to now him about a common friend who is an astrophysicist. Oh, it’s nice when the worlds blend..

Did you know, in england, they sell guns on TV? Here’s a the Teleshop that put the spot even online!

It seems funny, in the end it is rather sad. More guns than ever sold today. This viral campaign by Amnesty International UK wants to raise attention for an international arms trade treaty which should be initiated by the UN and signed by as many countries as possible.

The Beastles

This might be not in the web for long: The Beastles are mash-up remixes between the Beatles and the Beastie Boys. The producer is DJ BC, a DJ from Boston. He certainly got inspired by the “grey album”: a project of the now famous DJ Dangermouse who took the Beatles’s “White Album” and remixed it mash-up style with Jay-Z’s black album. The “Grey album” became the most downloaded piece of music ever and Dangermouse was eventually hired as a producer for the second Gorillaz album. The Beastles is not as good as the grey album, but has its charme. Actually, I like his crazy mix of Dee-Lite, The Doors, Salt’n'Pepa and Donna Summer more: Groovy Burnin’ Heart.

Blinkenlights documentation

One of the most amazing media installations ever was “Blinkenlights” in Berlin 2002. I just found the documentation video via their podcast. You must watch it, it kicks you off your feet!

The hacker commmunity Chaos Computer Club (CCC) used the abandoned skyscraper “Haus des Lehrers” on Alexanderplatz to turn the windows facade into a gigantic monochromatic screen. Over 8 floors with 144 spot lights formed this huge interactive display that could be seen even hundreds of metres from above.

The lights were controlled by three computers that turned them on and off. Like that the big screen could be animated in a very simple way. People sent commands in form of textfiles via email to the controlling computers, many of them were loveletters. These could be activated by a sms-code in the very moment the two were on Alexanderplatz.

The topof bringing interactivity into the massive multimedia installation was the option to play the old arcade game “Pong”. Mobile phones were used as controllers that influenced the lights in real time.
