Pimpin’ aint easy - from Hong Kong to Berlin
September 11, 2008 on 5:35 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, DJ mixes, Stylewalker | 2 Comments
Now this is a great story. Here’s a kid, from a German small town, Göttingen. He becomes a dj and is obessed with training with the decks. He gets really good, becomes a champion. Plays all over Germany, Europe, US. Goes on a tour to Asia - and stays there, playing regularly at parties in Hong Kong.
His name is Kid Fresh and I already wrote about him. Looking at the pictures on the partyblog accompanying the “Pimpin’ ain’t easy” parties in Hong Kong, he deals with a very fancy party crowd there.
Tonight he’ll be playing at Scala, Friedrichstr. Pimpin’ ain’t easy? In Kid Fresh’s case, this might be untrue.
Here is his Winter in Shang Hai Mix via Palmsout Sounds

I am getting lots of hits from people looking for “Karneval der Verpeilten 2008″. This year, this classical open air (for the tenth time!) will NOT take place at the Planetarium but behind the Hauptbahnhof, at Moabiter Werder on sunday, 08 September, 12-22 h - here is a map.

Danny Sangra is a true working pop artist. Flashy colours, poppy motivs and detailed painting are his trademarks. The London painter also successfully designs clothes, bars and hotels. He also designed T-Shirts for Levi’s and now Levi’s Berlin booked him to redesign the white walls of its Flagship store in Kurfürstendamm 237.
Tomorrow (Sep04) there will be an opening, starts 20:30h, Peaches will be djing, I guess a bunch of marketing, design and otherwise scenish people will show up but if you look arty enough you have the chance to sneak in and grab some free beer.

Anyone who is into music, I mean, really, like producing, djing, working with it, should take a look at Soundcloud. I heard about it the first time at Next in Hamburg where Alexander Ljung presented his startup. He is one of the founders who decided early this year to come from Stockholm to Berlin to start this servive for music professionals which shall “represent the whole processes of music production and promotion until finally a song is being released” as Alexander summarizes the idea.
And Soundcloud is intriguing, not least because so many professional musicians from the electronic scene already are members and share their songs before they come out to a selected network of contacts: Richie Hawtin, Tanith, the whole Compost crew to only name a few. One nice feature is the comment function where people can put a comment into the timeline of a track and thus precisely give feedback, e.g. ask for songnames in dj mixes. Here is an amazingly fresh yet powerful dubstepmix by Tanith.
Another feature is the dropbox, so here you can drop songs for me I should e.g. consider playing in dj sets or promote via stylewalker.net:
I have one 19 invites (thanks, Alex!) for Soundcloud left, so leave a comment if you’re interested.
Tomorrow, Alexander organizes a likemind meeting, 9 AM (!), so come around, have a coffee at Oberholz, Berlin.
How was Melt!08?
August 11, 2008 on 4:33 pm by Thomas | In Melt!, Music, Stylewalker | Say something!
by Jesus PresleyI wrote about Melt05, Melt06 and Melt07 and in the first years I had the feeling to be one lonely chronist of this special festival, the last two years there has been an impressive coverage from press and blog, so this time I am only telling my own story and link to others to round everything up.
It has been the biggest Melt! festival so far with more than 20 000 visitors and three days of packed stages from rock to techno from bands to Djs. And things that grow hurt sometimes. It’s not easy to maintain the magic of a small festival with special bands if more and more people want to come and see it. It’s a big tease and a big challenge to let it grow, organize three days instead of two and produce a big show like the one Björk did on the last day, sunday.

I had the chance to buy one of his pictures and I didn’t, now I really regret that. XooooX has a very memorable style, silhouettes of girls thinking about something. Most of the time they just think “XooooX”.
The Berlin street artist will not be present tonight when Circleculture gallery opens another streetart exhibtion, pushing the subversive power of free art in public places to another level. But many others will, so come around, 7pm!
Oh my god. Did I ever have such a physical experience of sound? Just by the pure power of bass? Did I ever see people rave to such crude beats, only driven by the sheer massiveness from the incredible sound system?
Substance at Berghain was amazing - we waited for almost two hours to get in but it was worth every minute (Anyway, I like standing in line, it kind of hypes up the whole atmosphere and everybody is happy, once they are in).
Already in the ground floor, before walking up the stairs of Berghain, the walls where shaking. We literally jumped up the steps and minutes later stood right next to the DJ. The crowd was shaking from the soundscapes and booming basslines and especially when compared to Panorama bar’s (Kompakt crew played the typical club sound) ever-so-familiar bom-bom-bom one realized what a revolutionary concept in club music dubstep really is.
Directly, I looked for more dj mixes and found an excellent dark and complex-drummy banger by Scuba, dj and founder of London based label Hotflush recordings via Real Vinylz -

Interaktives Musikvideo von K.I.Z.
July 9, 2008 on 1:54 pm by Thomas | In Design, Music, Publicity / Marketing, Stylewalker, hiphop | 1 Comment
13th of july: Bürgerentscheid Mediaspree
July 2, 2008 on 11:09 am by Thomas | In Stylewalker | Say something!
A little animation about the future with Mediaspree by PappsattKiki Blofeld - gone. Oststrand - gone. Bar25 - gone. Yaam - gone. Maria am Ufer - gone. All of these cultural pearls along the river in Berlin will be gone in very short time, should the plans of “Mediaspree” become reality.
183 000 Friedrichshain-Kreuzbergers can cast their vote concerning these plans of a big urban development project along the river Spree on July 13th. The project “Mediaspree” plans to build offices and buildings within the next years and is going to invest more than 2 billion Euro. The cost would be the loss of a lot of public urban space.
Urban development is a good thing, in this case though, many people fear to be left without being asked. All what is special about Berlin, the little, independent, free and creative places, the bars and clubs at the river, I would even go as far to say, the creativity itself, is in danger here. The intitiative with the martial name “Mediaspree versenken” demands no more than to leave a space of at least 50 meters between the river and the new houses, space to be used for all Berliners and all who come here. You can vote for this demand on July13th if you live in Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg - tell your friends!

Put your hands together with Luciano on Ibiza
June 19, 2008 on 11:31 am by Thomas | In DJ mixes, Stylewalker | Say something!
“Podemos hablar tu y yo un minuto? Tranquilo? Viniste sola? Te gusta bailar? Vamos a bailar.. Ah, sí, me gusta. Tus movimientos me inspiran.. Como te llamas? Te podía ofrecer una.. Mi nombre es Buen Pachanga”. This is how this absolute Mediterranean set by Luciano starts, directly from Ibiza and you can literally feel the sand in between your dancing toes. It’s all about deep and a little trancy grooves, a slow bass drum and some screams in the background. Summer can be so untroubled.

Stylewalker at Funkpark tomorrow
June 18, 2008 on 5:36 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Stylewalker, going out | Say something!
Funkpark / Rechenzentrum is one of Berlin’s most interesting locations right now. Situated right by the water, a little south-east from Treptower park, it is a beautiful outdoor area, with volleyball pitches, beach, little huts, bars and lots of sand. And during the weekends, the party moves to the indoor location Rechenzentrum, equipped with an impressive sound system.
Tomorrow, I have the big honor to play some tunes from 18h, then watch THE game (Ronaldo, I want to see you cry. Again.) and play on a little. So, please come around, find a map below. You can ride the bike from Ostkreuz (10min) or take the bus 21 from Frankfurter Tor, Bersarinplatz, Boxhagenerplatz and Ostkreuz (exit Markgrafendamm, then some meters to the right towards the crossing) stopping at Köpenickerchaussee/Blockdammweg. There’s a map after the click:

Changing Room Barcelona
June 11, 2008 on 12:54 pm by Thomas | In Barcelona Life, Fashion, Stylewalker | Say something!
Changing Room Barcelona is a concept to present new, exclusive and exciting fashion in a very unusual way. People are invited every now and then to participate in a showroom, located in different hotel rooms.
The next edition, called “Calor 08″ will take place at the hotel “Chic & basic” in Calle Princesa 50, this Saturday, June 14th, from 11 AM to 9 PM. On the website you will find many slideshows with pictures from past shows.
Although I am not living there anymore, I can ensure that it’s still a very vibrant and creative city, especially in fashion. Not at last because of that it has become home of Bread&Butter..

A bunch of Jack Tennis remixes
May 28, 2008 on 2:47 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, DJ mixes, Music, Stylewalker | Say something!
Picture from his MyspaceNow Jack Tennis not only has sympathetic glasses but is also a great dj who likes to rock crowds. Well, you’d say, is this not something any DJ likes? And again, I say, Jack Tennis REALLY likes to rock the crowd.
Here we have some nice neo-discoish remixes by this handsome scoundrel from Berlin. Together with Shir Khan and Supermarket they team up as Berlin Battery, play at parties and release remixes on the net. So, for frequent updates of his work, check Berlin Battery.

Also gut, Stylewalker wurde gehackt.
Also: Updaten!
Going out this weekend in Berlin
May 13, 2008 on 2:19 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Stylewalker, going out | Say something!
Be sure to check out the Stylewalker Partylist (note to self: must change the blog layout so there’s space on the homepage for the list, a gallery, a video and a featured dj mix - left side navigation, center: textupdates), there’s some nice fiestas coming on, tonight Jamie Lidell and the last party at Salon zur Wilden Renate before the summer break, tomorrow Karneval der Kulturen parade, afterparty at Ritter Butzke and most of all the Home Sweet Home open air at Rechenzentrum, Nalepastraße.
So, since I have so little time to write decent stuff here, I decided to let some pictures speak. Here are some nice spring impressions from Berlin.

Private party with Meindl and Koletzki
April 16, 2008 on 1:53 pm by Thomas | In Stylewalker | Say something!
Phillipp found this cool dj mix by the Florian Meindl and Oliver Koletzki. Meindl publishes on Trapez, Flash or Stil vor Talent and is one of Koletzki’s crazy party buddies of which he has a lot.
This techhouse bastard of a mix is called “Milano Private Party” and it sounds exactly like that: Models and bookers, designers and rich people who can afford this kind of lifestyle, take coca**ne from the glass table and dance at the terrace with their sunglasses. So, come on people, pour the champagne, let the bass roll, lose your jewelery and miss your plane back to L.A..
Tonight: Stylewalker at BBBbaby
April 15, 2008 on 1:37 pm by Thomas | In Barcelona Life, Berlin Scene, Fashion, Stylewalker, going out | 3 Comments
Got it?
