Netzpolitik.org is the widest read German political weblog. The authors, foremost Markus Beckedahl, always take a clear position for privacy, freedom and transparency and against public surveillance, strict copyright laws and security-instead-of-freedom politics. In the German internet sphere they are the strongest voice for open source, creative commons, knowledge sharing, free culture and freedom of expression.

The authors try to raise public interest and awareness for the dangers of surveillance and data collection and the importance of privacy, not only by the police and other executive institutions but foremost by private companies. In Germany, many examples of private data and surveillance abuse have been published in German media recently: customer data by Deutsche Telekom (or T-Com) was sold, Telekom, Lufthansa and Post top managers have been surveilling employees and customers, German retailer Lidl hired private investigators to spy on their employees. These are only a few examples to stress the importance of the said issues.

On saturday, January 31st, Beckedahl published the summary of a conversation between the Berlin data protection officer and Deutsche Bahn top executives reporting about the methods of Network Deutschland, the company hired to spy on employees and customers. This memo was written by the data protection office and anonymously sent to Netzpolitik. The memo is actually pretty boring, Spiegel has way more exciting facts and talks about more than 170 000 people who have been spied on by Deutsche Bahn.

What makes this case exciting is that Deutsche Bahn tries to legally threaten Netzpolitik for making this memo public. A memo which has been cited many times by other media already. Funny enough, the reactions in the blogosphere and by other media in only one day make this memo famous.

And not only bloggers, but basically all citizens, politicians, architects, police men, journalists hope that Bahn CEO Hartmut Mehdorn now will have to go for good. If not for the blogger threat than at least for the spying scandal.

Inspired by Peter’s blogpost about Life updates, I would like to state some things, too.

Over the last year (2008), I was still working as a freelance online consultant but mainly doing concepts and creating ideas for the Berlin based digital communications agency PANORAMA3000 and its clients. I started to work for P3000 in december 2007 after having finished my studies in communcation and business at FU Berlin.

Working for P3000 has been great so far, it’s a very ambitious and young team, consisting of people who like exactly what I like: music, the interwebs and being creative. I had lots of possibilities to shape ideas and concepts for clients like Universal Music, Sony Music, arvato Bertelsmann and even the Golfclub Wannsee Berlin. Some of my posts here might have been work related but since most of it treats with funky web ideas and music, I did not take the chance every time to say I was also working (for money!) with that particular project. Sorry for that.

Next year we’ll be working for young socialists within the Social Democratic Party (SPD), short: Jusos. There are elections to the European parliament and the Bundestag (German parliament who then elect the government) coming up and we will be helping Jusos to tune their websites and most of all their online supporters management, using social media platforms and tools. You probably know that I did work for SPD with ABFace2net in the past. And that stylewalker.net always featured posts dealing with politics.

Of course I will present some strategies, tools and ideas here and hope you will find it interesting to take a look at our work and sometimes behind the curtains. Personally, I like the social democratic people we are working with and often, of course not always, agree with their political ideas about a social society, education, environment and regulating financial markets on a global level.

Very well made video by the German ministry of labour to promote their “Ausbildungsbonus“, a public promotion for companies that are willing to train apprentices who otherwise would have a hard time to find a workplace.

Note: Sadly enough, the information what the Ausbildungsbonus really is, is rather hidden within the page: It is a one-time payment of 4000 to 6000 EUR (depending on the wage) which is paid to companies 50% when the training starts and 50% when the apprentice applies for the final exam.

I discovered Wordle in a Twitter-tweet by Steve Rubel where he compared Obama’s and McCain’s acceptance speeches with the help of this text analysis tool. It’s very open to interpretation indeed but somehow pretty and illustrative.

I compared two speeches of Müntefering and Merkel, the one Müntefering held at the Parteitag in Hamburg and one Merkel held to celebrate the Soziale Marktwirtschaft. They were surprisingly similar. A very interesting fact is that both use the word “müssen” a lot. Maybe German politicians should think about putting their messages into sentences with more “können”.

This weekend in Berlin will see art, music, politics and overall a mashup of all: Friday night will see Substance, the biggest Dubstep party on the European continent so far, at Berghain, there is the big art festival Videoakt on friday and saturday where Stylewalker’s going to spin, and on sunday people living in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg have the chance to cast their votes for or against the urban development project Mediaspree.

When Hellsongs played their showcase at Hoppetosse two weeks ago, this song was one of the most beautiful and sums up pretty well the idea behind Hellsongs: To take powerful metal songs including the message and transform them into sensitive acoustic indie music.

In the case of the following video, the message is: protest! The best moment is from minute 3:00 when a tiny fist becomes a very powerful and by being so tiny, even more impressive symbol. Unfortunately, the very insisting introduction speech by singer Harriet Ohlsson is missing in video when she talked about Burma. Especially in such a situation of absolute powerlessness towards injustice it is a good feeling to at least raise your fist together..

When you say a word like two hundred times it kind of looses its meaning, doesn’t it?

Let me give a wild prophecy: There won’t be much change. Whoever becomes to be president.

Überall wird über Kaioo geredet, eine Online-Community, die, wenn sie erstmal richtig brummt, ihre Werbeerlöse, nach Abzüge der Kosten und aufgeschlüsselt nach einem recht simplen zehn-Gewinner-take-it-all-Votingprinzip an gemeinnützige Organisationen verteilt. Das Ding kriegt massig Presse, zwei Ex-Bertelsmann-Manager sitzen im Vorstand und alle freuen sich, dass es nun eine “echte soziale Community” gebe.

Dabei ist das völliger Quatsch und nicht nur der Spiegel ist dieser frechen Aussage prompt aufgesessen. Sogar eigentlich doch recht gut informierte Start-up-Blogs wie Zweinull, Blognation (Update: Sorry, ebenso, wie ich es beim Werbeblogger übersehen hatte, war mir auch nicht aufgefallen, dass ebenfalls Blognation schon über Betterplace geschrieben hatte) oder Gründernet lassen sich dazu hinreißen, den Claim unkritisch zu übernehmen, viele andere Blogs wie z.B. Werbeblogger folgen.

Dabei gibt es längst eine tatsächlich soziale Community, die den Gemeinnutzgedanken nicht nur als PR-Flagge vor sich herträgt und den Rest lediglich genau wie Facebook, Myspace und Co. aufzieht. Betterplace.org dreht sich nämlich per se um soziales Engagement und bringt Projektverantwortliche aus aller Welt mit Unterstützern (die mit Geld, Zeit oder Know-How helfen) zusammen, die laufend über den Fortgang des Projektes informiert werden. Freundesverknüpfungen sorgen für Vertrauensnetzwerke und machen neue Projekte bekannt.

Nicht, dass ich die Kaioo-Idee per se schlecht finde. Aber mich stört diese Monstranz des “echten Sozialen” – denn das sollte doch wirklich etwas tiefer gehen, als Klingeltöne vermarkten und dann dem Roten Kreuz drei Euro überweisen.

Und nebenbei fällt auf, dass Watchberlin nochmal ordentlich zugelegt hat, was User Experience, Interface und Surface und Underface-Design angeht. Mit anderen Worten, es flutscht und läuft und funktioniert (fast) alles. Hut ab.

Update: Sowas, Watchberlin kommen nicht klar, erst hab ich ein hässliches De-Bug-Fenster auf meinem Blog und dann statt Broder Friedman im Film. Schade.

This last weekend I was in Hamburg, attending the big socialdemocratic party summit (Bundesparteitag) that gathered several thousand people to redefine social democratic politics and elect their representers like Kurt Beck, party leader and often said to be a provincial teddy but who proved to have the strength to lead the party on the path towards the next elections.

I liked the atmosphere and the political discussions and met many interesting people. I also quite liked most of the programmatic decisions like a general basic school with ten obligatory classes for all or trying to ban rightwing extremist party NPD. Strange enough in the big media the idea of a general speed limit of 130 kmh had the biggest echo, a very banal decision I don’t care about at all. Well, it’s the auto-country here.

My job was to present and promote the new political community for the social democrats: MeineSPD.net. We (A&B FACE2NET and the SPD) have been working on that platform for quite some time so it was like attending the birth of a child, very anxious about how it would see its first light. And the reactions were amazing. Of course, there are many things to improve, but in general, the people loved their new community were they can connect to other party members and people interested in social democratic politics, upload fotos, discuss in forums, build groups and blog. In the course of the three days there were about 3000 registrations. Simply amazing.

Das Buch “A virtuos cirlce” von Pippa Norris ist ein Schlüsselwerk für alle, die sich mit politischen Kampagnen und ihrem Wandel in den letzten Jahrzehnten beschäftigen. Vor allem der Einfluss des Internets auf politische Arbeit wird von ihr detailliert dargestellt und ein schöner Vergleich zwischen verschiedenen Ländern gezogen. Dieses Werk ist nun auf der Homepage von Mrs Norris, die derzeit Direktorin für Democratic Governance beim UNDP ist, herunterladbar und sei hiermit dem interessierten Publikum wärmstens empfohlen:

Bill sieht nicht nur überrascht, sondern ehrlich gesagt, richtig traurig aus.. Dann präsentiert sie ihren Song, sie hat sich nach einem Contest für “You & I” von Celine Dion entschieden. Pathos und Tremolo, naja. Für patriotische Amis viel schlimmer: Dion ist Kanadierin!

Nachdem ich jetzt aus mysteriösen Gründen sowohl bei diesem Spreeblick-Artikel als auch bei einem auf merkwürdige Art wieder verschwundenen Artikel auf dem NRW-SPD-Blog keinen Kommentar anbringen konnte, folgt das ganze nun an dieser Stelle, ist ja auch wichtig genug.

Die Hysterie um Entwicklungshilfe für Afrika geht mir zusehends auf den Sack, das muss ich leider so deutlich sagen. Ich weiß nicht, was z.B. Bob Geldof reitet außer der Sucht nach Aufmerksamkeit, wenn er sich ein ums andere Mal als Weltretter geriert. Das, was er heute als angeblicher Chefredakteur der Bild-Zeitung ablieferte, setzt der ganzen scheinheiligen Soße die Krone auf.

Pic by Magsen from the G8 Flickr PoolShame on me: Da hatte ich schon vor mehr als einer Woche Konzerte an der Ostsee im Rahmen des G8-Protests (Protest, ich weiß nicht, irgendwie scheue ich mich dieses Wort zu benutzen, wie wärs mit: Alternative?) angekündigt. Und keiner hat’s gemerkt, dass das ja viel zu früh war. Anyway. Das Treffen beginnt erst in diesen Tagen am Mittwoch und vorgestern gab es Krawall in Rostock.

Keiner weiß genau, was passiert ist, Staatsgewalt und Opposition schieben sich die Schuld zu, es ist hässlich. Und auch ich muss mir wohl eingestehen, dass meine Hoffnung, es gäbe lediglich ein buntes Festivaltreiben um den vermaledeiten Zaun, zumindest vorerst gescheitert ist. Man kann nur hoffen, dass Leute wie die Hedonistische Internationale mit friedlichem Weltverbesserung-Rave (Donnerstag, am Strand) das Bild des Protests von schwarz-vermummt wieder auf bunt schalten.

Aus der Bloggerszene wird gerne Häme auf Politiker ausgegossen: Mit neuen Medien kennen sie sich nicht aus oder sind gar Technikverweigerer (Generation 0.0). Oder das politische System an sich (hier sind vor allem Parteien in der Kritik): Nicht fähig, die Demokratie zu einer Version 2.0 umzukrempeln. Aber wenn dann mal was passiert merkt es keiner.

Seit ein paar Wochen kann man den Entwurf des zu verabschiedenden Grundsatzprogramms der SPD auf programmwerkstatt.spd.de bewerten und eigene Thesen veröffentlichen und in den Diskurs einbringen. So entsteht ein Meinungsbild verteilt über Themen und Aussagen, die entweder besonders kontrovers sind (d.h. sowohl Zustimmung wie Ablehnung ernten) oder mehrheitlich angenommen oder abgelehnt werden. Dieses Meinungsbild sowie die neuen Thesen werden in den endgültigen Entwurf einfließen, der im Oktober auf dem Bundesparteitag verabschiedet werden soll.

Many would agree to the statememt that Germany is a country of self-moaning and self-critizism. Especially from the outside this often seems exaggerated and unfounded. But the real problem is not the underestimation of our own strength but it is: dangerous self reference. This counts especially for the inability to face questions of immigration which are key to solving problems like demographic change, innovation and globalization. These questions are simply not adressed by any party, politican or lobby group.

So, what’s the origin of violence and war? The answer seems simple: Angry young men. Sociologically this is summarized in the theory of the “Youth Bulge” which describes the battle of the sons for the powerful positions in a society. Happens all over the world for centuries, again and again.
