Cold war places in Berlin: A documentary
February 19, 2010 on 4:45 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Campaigns, Movies, Publicity / Marketing | 1 CommentIn this video, Tom Littlewood takes us on a journey to places where the Cold War past of Berlin is still visible. So they go to Teufelsberg, an artificial hill where the NSA built a listening station in the 60ies to spy on the communist part of Berlin, consisting of strange big white balls on top of the hill. They takl with a former army commander and visit the bunker at airport Tempelhof where thousands of meters of war film burnt right after world war II. Great piece of work, entertaining and educating, I like.
A very nice branding combination as well: VBS teamed up with Palladium boots to produce this documentary. Taking the history of these french military boot brand into account, documentaries from interesting and forgotten places seem to represent Palladium pretty well.
Mouthmade Dubstep by DubFX
June 4, 2009 on 5:51 pm by Thomas | In Dubstep, Movies, Music | Say something!Beatboxing is sure fascinating but can be pretty annoying too. But this thing here is absolutely brilliant. Dub FX performs a Dubstep tune, which is originally recorded with a loop machine plus and only his mouth. And it’s a great tune, deep, melodic, intense.
Filmed by Ben Dowden, I found it via Echolot, Stylespion has more videos.
“Captured” – documenting Clayton Patterson’s work
January 5, 2009 on 3:06 pm by Thomas | In Art, Movies, New York, Zoo York | Say something! On saturday I had the chance to see the European premier of “Captured” at Babylon Berlin, as part of the American independent film fest “Unknown Pleasures“.
“Captured” is a film about the New York artist Clayton Patterson and a film about the change in the Lower East side, Manhattan, during the last 20 years. Patterson has tons of foto and video material from the time when the Lower East side was a dirty, cheap, chaotic, independent, arty, druggy, anarchic area. Not only with Giuliani this changed into yet another hip and expensive place to live in New York nowadays. “Captured” shows this change and the protagonists around Patterson, e.g. the art scene, the hardcore scene (with Bad Brains e.g.), the queer scene, the squatters.
Filmmakers Den Levin, Ben Solomon and Jenner Furst managed to boil down Pattersons’ hours of film into a consistent, exciting and interesting 90min movie, which literally makes you feel sad you hadn’t been there when it was still rough.

Best of Evolution2
November 7, 2008 on 4:59 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Hobnox, Movies | Say something!
The Evolution2 is the sequel of the first, very susccesful talent competition Evolution by Hobnox. The contest is coming closer to the final decisions, though it is still time to submit projects to enter the finals.
While the Evo2 is running hot right now, the winners of the first contest are presenting the results of their work since winning the contest at the big Hobnox launch party and evolution festival in february 08. Missy Magazine, a mag about pop, politics and style from a feministic viewpoint is now available as a good old glossy print mag, while Boombaker, a very energetic live drum’n’bass/breakbeat band are on tour right now.
Here, I’d like to present some of the most interesting pieces and explain the rules in a nutshell. Continue >>
Ist Sarah Palin Loriot?
October 31, 2008 on 6:38 pm by Thomas | In Movies, Politics | Say something!

Berlin Calling premiere party
October 2, 2008 on 1:01 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Movies, Music | 1 CommentThe Berlin Calling premiere at Kulturbrauerei rocked. It was packed, people laughed and clapped a lot and the following party at Maria am Ufer took the people on a trip into the world of the movie. Sascha Funke played, Paul Kalkbrenner presented a live set with songs from the movie which are the kind of techno music I love so much: Powerful, massive, yet very longing and soulful. Go watch the movie, now! And here are som impressions from the premiere and the party.
This is an old clip but I had to think about this extremely funny comedian, Pablo Francisco, when we talked about the strange voices one can hear in movie previews today. Pablo has a great parody about this exact phenomenon but he has much more funny types to offer: the Mexican girlfriend, the Chippendale dancer who shaves his huevos.. But here we go for the trailers:
Watch out for more Melt! coverage tomorrow and the kickstart into a late open air rave party season in Berlin!
Berlin Calling is a film by Hannes Stöhr (e.g. director of “Berlin is in Germany“, “One day in Europe“) featuring Paul Kalkbrenner and many other musicians from the network of Berlin techno label Bpitch Control.
Sunday (yesterday), the trailer celebrated its world premiere on Myspace -already, almost 10 000 watched the very emotional ride between party, excess, despair and paranoia. In the movie, Kalkbrenner stars DJ Ickarus who travels the world djing and is about to release his second album – like the Ikarus from Greek mythology he raises a little to high.. The movie comes to the theatres on october 2nd.

What is Hit and Run Kino?
June 11, 2008 on 9:56 am by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Movies, going out | 1 Comment“HIT-AND-RUN” stands for meeting up at one known place at a certain time and then walk altogether to a secret location. So, if you miss the departure, you’re out! If you do make it, you’re in for some very interesting and inspiring experience. Like the people who organize the Hit and Run Kino. Almost every wednesday you will find an email where to meet up in the evening an then will be guided to a unique and special place to watch unique and special films. It’s great!
Like today: Meet at 21:00h at Hauptbahnhof – Hauptausgang Europaplatz and walk to a abandoned hospital. In the operating room you will watch “Komm Süßer Tod”.
If you are lucky, you can get on this list and be informed next time.

Young film festivals in Berlin 2008
April 24, 2008 on 2:37 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Hobnox, Movies | Say something!“The only jews who crossed the tracks in the neighborhood were students making documentaries and drug addicts”
Sehsüchte, Europe’s Biggest International Student Film Festival takes place again at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen „Konrad Wolf“ in Marlene-Dietrich-Allee 11 in Potsdam. The quote from below stems from the Israelian movie “Roads” about kids in Lod, drugs and hip hop and perspectives for young people.
The rest of the program is highly interesting as well and Hobnox presents some selected movies from the Sehsüchte 08 program.
In general, this is a good time for film festivals in Berlin, Britspotting, the British independent film festival took place from 10th to 16th of april and now moves to Cologne. achtung Berlin, the new Berlin film award which focuses on young Berlin filmmakers has just finished as well (16th to 22nd of april).
Welcome to the movie city Berlin!

..bloggen wieder.

Hobnox Evolution: In search for creative talents
December 4, 2007 on 7:37 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Hobnox, Movies, Music | 1 CommentHobnox is a new platform for creative people. Sounds simple? Yes, it kind of is. Hobnox wants to find talents on the net and help them to grow. And Hobnox wants to entertain. They have fantastic shows on their three channels Sly-Fi (I blogged about their coverage of the Melt-concerts here and here), 99stories which is all about movies and Str33t which is about street culture.
It’s fascinating, once I dive into this universe of shows I at least spend half an hour watching “11 Freunde magazine” or the very classy movie mag “Oh Gosh“. To kick off their efforts Hobnox organizes a contest called “Evolution” – until the end of January people can upload their creative projects in the categories music, film and street. So far, cool stuff has been uploaded but there’s still a lot to gain. After a voting a jury (e.g. with Moneybrother or Intro editor Linus Volkmann) will pick a winner in each category who will then get a package worth of 25000€ in project funding (like studio or postproduction costs etc.). Here is a recent video of some ionteresting projetcs so far, actually, I really like Pete Blume, kind of remind of Madsen a little..
And here is a video of a secret Jahcuzi concert at a Boombx event!
Best of Popkomm
September 21, 2007 on 11:24 am by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Hobnox, Melt!, Movies, Music | Say something!
So, the wild days have started, Berlin is a little extra hyped on top, a little more than normally even, because big pop business is in town. Yes, there is still a big music industry but it’s not lables so much anymore that make the big profits. It’s all in the live concerts. The bookers, the agencies, the festival organizers – these are the ones that run the business really.
So it’s all about concerts and which band is able to really give the people a good time and makes them tell their friends and come back the next time. Music is a service, more than ever.
A band who is able to rock it every time are Mike Skinner aka the Streets and his musicians. Wednesday evening, a sponsored concert brought about 1500 people to an open air venue and after a little chilly start everybody got into a great mood and danced and hugged each other to get a little warmer. Thumbs up for Mike Skinner!
Yesterday, I missed Polarkreis18 AGAIN! Damn, but these boys play and play and actually here is a little concert (again, by Sli-Fi, these people have a LOT of stuff on the net..)
So what’s the program? Tonight: Trentemöller at Maria and Sonar Kollektiv, at Tape and saturday Pokerflat night at Watergate and Sunday, well, if the weather stays as great as it did these days, there will be some open air after hour like the Stadtfest or the Karneval for sure..<—ffca7119315207c171745678b1f9e02b—>

Patentblau Open Air
September 11, 2007 on 2:37 pm by Thomas | In Berlin Scene, Movies, Stylewalker, going out | 1 CommentAfter a weekend full of culture (Bode Museum, Museum of Natural History, Alexanderplatz underground party) the finishing highlight was the Patentblau Stadtfest at Storkower Straße. I kind of was too tired to take a video but I can say that it was as good at last year when this video was taken by Monofourmie.
Awesome guide in Bode Museum Berlin
September 11, 2007 on 2:31 pm by Thomas | In Art, Berlin Scene, Movies | 3 CommentsThe Bode Museum is the latest opening on the famous Museumsinsel, protected by the UN world heritage, full of museums, some are yet to be renovated. On 19 October 2006, the Bode Museum was re-opened in its entirety, displaying the Sculpture Collection, the Numismatic Colletion and works from the Gemäldegalerie – Old Master Paintings.
In the video you’ll see a very involved guide telling an interesting story about a mosaic.
Fantastic media usage in Naturkundemuseum Berlin
September 11, 2007 on 2:26 pm by Thomas | In Art, Berlin Scene, Design, Movies, Science | 2 CommentsThe museum of natural history in Berlin has recently been renovated and now features an impressive amount of interactive use of multimedia stations: 3D-movies that take the environment into account, moving screens, touch sensitive information. It’s full of kids and they seem to have a lot of fun learning.
Here you’ll see an interactive projection about animal families.
