The Guardian and Soundcloud put together a list of bands they consider to be great in 2010. The bands had to be featured in the “New band of the day” column. Certainly, there can be disagreement in the selection but there are some really interesting artists featured. All very indie, poppy music, some digitally experimental. I like Washed Out, Elle Goulding and James Blake.

New Band Of The Day

May I present my favourite podcasts dealing with dj mixes in the last months.

1. Resident Advisor
Every week a new mix and everyone is of high quality. The genres are diverse from heavier Berghain techno (Dettmann, Fengler) to Experimental (Surgeon), Discoish (Brothers Bouaziz), straigt club (Carl Craig) or dubby and steppy (Applebim).
Here is an example by Scuba ak SCB
RA198 100315 Scuba vs SCB Resident Advisor Mix by Surefire

2. Ninja Tunes Solid Steel
Ninja Tunes used to be and is one of my favourite labels, with their Solid Steel radio show they always manage to surprise and show the diversity of their taste. Bass filled music, rare funk tunes, club bangers come together in this always very well selected and presented mixes. Here is an example of Clubb Rock’s Darren Judge & Mikee Lazy with tracks from Lady Chann, Seiji and MJ Cole, Untold, Joy Orbison and Ramadanman.
Solid Steel Radio Show 18/6/2010 Part 1 + 2 – Clubb Rock, Zero T by Ninja Tune

3. Drumandbass.de
Holding up the Drum’n'Bass flag for the German scene, J-Cut and Kolt Siewerts unregularly present fresh tunes from the drum and bass universe, pretty straight, with J-Cut leaning more to the liquid, said easy and dense, side of the range, Siewerts with more jumpy and wobbly stuff. With a very entertaining style of presenting their show they soon hit the German podcast charts. Here is one of their own production, also a hit last year, the “Flute Tune” to get an idea.
J-Cut & Kolt Siewerts – The Flute Tune feat. Demolition Man – Fire (Freeze Dubplate) by Michelsen

4. Fabric London
Despite the tragic fact that London’s probably best club has gone into administration their podcast is one of the podcast pearls at the electronic music’s heaven. Great mixes and music presentations by people like Four Tet, Surgeon, Vadim and Jazzanova. Absolutely listenable.

Update No.1 (thanks to Philipp)
5. Xlr8r
Big names like MJ Cole, James Holden or Trentemöller present a very diverse range of electronic music.

Update No.2 (thanks to Kay)
6. Also very awesome and for all the dubby dubstep lovers (just like me) around here is the Wax Treatment Podcast. The regular sunday dubstep night at Horst Berlin features DJs like Pete and Surgeon. Dubstep from its nonwobbly, but atmospheric and complex side.

Metalheadz go back to their roots and release Lenzman and Rya, walking on Inner City Life paths. Very nice video, talking a bike ride through Brighton.

A somewhat more temporary way of producing this kind of feel is maybe this song
Cruel Intentions by Simian Mobile Disco (Joker Remix)

found via Pluggednotthugged, one really great blog about bass music.

To end this post, I have to admit that it would be stupid not to download this great resident advisor podcast by Pete, found via Monday Edition

Also: Enjoy!

Continue >>

ZOE.LEELA “DESTROY SHE SAYS” from Zoe.Leela on Vimeo.

Zoe.Leela is hot new stuff from Berlin, out of the very active urban electronic pop scene: A very charismatic singer, great tunes and melodies, something in between Jahcoozi and Zero 7. The first album “Queendom Come” will be released by netlabel Rec 72, free, with a Creative Commons license. Release party on sunday, 13th, at Zapata, Berlin.

bar25onstylewalkerIs it now closed forever? The legendary Bar25 had some closing parties already, this august was another one. This open air, after hour party place, close to the river rents its land from the Berlin sanitation department and every year needs to negotiate a new contract. Depending on public will and the awareness that subculture is one of Berlin’s biggest assets, they might get a new for 2010, the pary will go on and we will see yet another closing party.
Here is a mix from this year’s last fest, by Dirty Döring – trippy, circuslike, dancy, dreamy a little balearic and minimal at the same time.

going out in Berlin tonight? Check this! I especially recommend the Netaudio festival.

And now listen to this before you go out and get in the close-your-eyes-and-get-lost-party-mood.

promocovercardboxer072cThis mix is fantastic, it presents the deep, warm and longing side of the dubstep, not the aggressive and wobbly part. Funny enough it’s to promote Haito’s new record which is rather tech-housy than dubby. Haito has been djing and producing since 1988 and now comes out on Boxer recordings.
Enjoy!

K-OS – 4 3 2 1

September 15, 2009 on 11:16 am by Thomas | In download mp3, hiphop, Music | 1 Comment

September 9, 2009 on 3:26 pm by Thomas | In DJ mixes, download mp3 | 1 Comment

cover_web Kolt Siewerts Drumnbass mixIt’s the f**ng drum and the f** bass! Kolt Siewerts strikes again and gives us one massive jump up club banging drum n bass mix with lots of fun and smile. Starts off with a remix that might be “Ton, Steine, Scherben” and continues to some inyourface-attacks and doesn’t fear the souly moments either.

Besides this guy turns 33 on 20090909 – so it’s a present he has for us. Massive thanks and happy birthday!

Enjoy: “Spaß mit Bass” by Kolt Siewerts

If you like his style, here you can watch the video to his own smash hit “The flute tune”

Check out Fabric’s page on Soundcloud, they have some nice tunes to give away. I especially like “We Nuh Run”

and the Ralph Lawson mix

Ralph Lawson 15 years of 2020Vision by fabric

patrickgraeser_squalid_coverIt’s the second release on NIG (Nights in Gale) records and I love the record because it’s so diverse: there is a massive techno tune, some very dissected minmal soundscape techhouse thing by Tom Dicicco and a deep dubsteppy remix by David Harrow.

Now, it has gotten some very mentionable mentions from Japan and Italy, good feedback from Timo Maas and Laurent Garnier and, amongst others, charted by Ryan Elliot.

You can listen to Squalid and download it at whatpeopleplay or order it as good old vinyl at Juno

Here is Patrick’s latest mixtape!

Patrick Graeser Promo Mix Juli 2009 by patrickgraeser

You can book Patrick at Confidance booking or just follow him on MySpace or Soundcloud.

In may, I played at the Webinale party and was quite excited because it took place at Week End club on top of Berlin with a brilliant soundsystem and DJ booth. The party was great and everybody danced plus I was lucky to have the mix recorded so here I can present two 30 minutes mixes, one opening house mix and one which is more dubsteppy and in the end loaded with hiphop classics. Enjoy!

Stylewalker says thank you with Rocca ZillaMany, many people really did suggest me as a speaker, thank you all for that! The message got through, obviously: yesterday I got an email by the Next09 organization team, thanking me for the many applications.

I hope Next09 did not mind the little community campaign I pushed here, I think it was a nice idea to demonstrate a little of that internet community power in real time when it’s exactly the subject I want to talk about. Plus, Next09 got some nice promotion – some people (enthusiasts and professionals about the internet by the way) had not heard about it before. So, let’s see if I make it, I bring you presents from Hamburg for sure if I go!

And here’s one already: “Bring me the head of Zilla Rocca”, by Zilla Rocca, superb oldschooly hip hop shit, especially the second song “The first order of business” which features a Talk Talk sample I would have liked to use as well. If I was a producer. Other influences: El-P, RZA, Kanye West, Dan the Automator, David Axelrod, J Dilla, Havoc, Rick Rubin. Check the Rocca Zilla profile on Soundclick.
