3 years of Innervisions mix and Ben Mono mix

In a techno city like Berlin, Innercity, a regular club night held by the Innervisions crew (read about it at taz) used to be the haven of groovy and soulful club music, from old to new, from disco to house. Headed by Dixon with many guests over the years, Innervisions at Week-End was a sure standard in the club scene for elegant party goers.

On Saturday January 19th, Innervisions celebrated their third birthday and at the same time their last party at Week-end. As a thank you, they gave away a free CD to all of the party guests - and it’s brilliant. Starts with very slow and dreamy funk tunes, moving into more minmal housy tunes, featuring I:Cube, Château Flight and Martin Buttrich. A very POWERful mix by Harrison Schaaf

What a name. Harrison Schaaf. Considering that “Schaf” in German in “sheep” and taking into account that sheep normally are very quiet (unless there’s a dog chasing them around..) and frugal animals, this is a total contradiction.

Via thefastlife comes this very powerful mix by the guy that Palms Out named “the next Kavinsky”. It’s eighties, it’s RAP, it’s a little cheesy synthie stuff, it’s not minimal at all, but boosts out with lots of glow and sweat. Get Schaaf’s “Gigantic mix” on Zshare.

Just flew in via Myspace, here’s a new mix by Berlin based DJ Cotumo, I very much dig. It’s fluffy, a little trippy and percussive but not too much of one thing. I guess you can call it Minimal..

Hi bio says: “Inspired by artists like Matthew Herbert, Akufen and Metro Area, Johannes began thinking about sharing his music through playing in Clubs. Nowadays Cotumo plays at Netlag, Pulsar, Pentagonik, Klangsucht, Süss&Sauer partys and at a variety of festivals and clubs in and around Berlin. After playing in London in 2006 he is aiming to Wales, Turin and Zuerich. How was Berlin festival and what’s going on this weekend?

I was a bit unlucky on Berlin festival, cause I had a little accident with my bike (looking forward to having the scars) and thus missed the best parts of the festival: friday night at Tape and saturday afternoon with Go!team, Peaches and Uffie. Friday afternoon and saturday night, while I attended, seemed to be a constant going away from some place rather than a coming to. And the shows I saw where pretty poor, Shitdisco, Midlake, even Tocotronic. But maybe I am a little over-festivaled, next weekend I’ll be in Budapest to see Sziget, let’s see how that works out. There are many videos on the Berlin festival on Youtube, unfortunately I did not see THAT killervideo I had to post here. Still, nice festival, lots of interesting people and overall a friendly new-ravy atmosphere. Sorry it took me so long to write about - it’s because of the fingers (blogging can be so self-referential).

Enough of the past - here’s the future. If you want to go to festivals this weekend, you might want to check these out: Schwedenparty, which takes place on an island in Sweden, very peaceful, deserted and nice (but clean up after yourselfes!) and the Goldmund festival. All electronic and with special hedonistic underground Berlin feel.

Moreover there are some good parties in Berlin, like today at Freakmode at ZMF with some Cologne funky-minimal experts like Marc Lansley (download Marc Lansley’s latest and really exquisit mix here - it’s funky, it’s deep, it’s melodic, it’s something you want to hear a second time).

While that’s it for today (friday) tomorrow, saturday, there’s a lot going on. Like the Mittekill festival (for free) at Eschloraque, the last corner of independent and punky culture close to Hackescher Markt, starts at 14h! Also, there’s “Liebe ist Cool”s birthday party in a very cool location in Friedrichshain

London, Fabric

Going out in London is a special thing. More special than in Berlin where going out is something casual, normal and cheap, while in London it’s a celebration. Berlin is great because everybody is just hanging out, having a chilled time, with no stress at all. Can be a little dull because of that too . If you reach a certain limit there is no further, it seems.

London is speed, business, danger, money. And when people go out there, they let loose and forget about their shitty service or administration jobs, they don’t care about the money, they just want to have a good time.

Fabric is a perfect place for that. We went there last friday, it was already 2am or so and there were three different lines to stand in. Some pretty wasted people around us, getting into trouble, some guy rapping about his ‘44 (caliber? I had no idea..), and suddenly it opens up and everybody rushes in. Inside: Massive drumnbass, an interior architecture you couldn’t figure out really, lots of stairs and different rooms, three dancefloors and overall an amazing sound. Crystalclear, fat and crisp, it wasn’t even too loud but just overwhelming. Sad enough, Fabric closes about half past 5, I would have liked to dance longer.

But walking around in the morning light on the Millenium bridge was a pleasure, too.. Ever since I listen to Drum’n'Bass again and there are some brilliant sources on the internet, like dnb-sets.de or newmixes.com.

Here, I picked out one DJ Hype mix from Kiss 100, especially the first tune is absolutely mindblowing:

Two mixes for my current mood

Yes! It’s done, next to me lies a big book and I can’t believe I have written it. Last night, at 2am, my laptop took his last breath and stopped to cooperate with the power supply. I knew I had only a limited time left to finish the thesis and I saw the display going like “you have 40 minutes left” - “you have 20 minutes left” - “you have 10 minutes left”. I had never typed that fast. The laptop turned off one second after copying the latest version on a memory stick. Phew..

Thank you so much everybody who helped me and supported me (thx for the comments!), especially Nici, Chrissie, Pit, Max and Jana! You are great!!

Hannes Metz is one of the people behind Caffeine, a new and hot party series in different locations in Berlin. Had I been able to walk last friday (too much football..) I would have attended their fest at Ballhaus Ost with Matthias Tanzmann for sure.

Now I revcovered and can dance around in my apartment not only because I am so happy to finally post the 50th DJ set (!) but rather because this is such a nice and funky, deep tech house mix, with reduced melodies and surprising effects that make a worthy jubilee mix

Kornél Kovács in the mix

This man rocked the club last saturday where I lost two jackets, a scarf and my keys. Good news is: I got it all back! But wow, what a party. Kornél Kovács is only 21 years old, lives in Stockholm and plays clubs like the Spybar or Teatron. We were happy to welcome him here in Berlin - and much more than the welcome I hardly remember.

So it’s a fantastic club, not only because lost things get found, but because of the familial atmosphere. And it’s so secret that I was told not to write anything about it - not even here on this tiny, unimportant blog. Wow. But that’s ok, exclusiveness is a secret to many succesful places.

Tobias Thomas (Kompakt) in the mix

Kompakt is the label that even more than all other great ones (like Karaoke Kalk, Substatic or Treibstoff) built the “minimal-fame of Cologne”, also with their big distribution network they smartly built over the last years. I personally don’t own any Kompakt records but their DJs sure deserve the popularity. One of its protagonists is Tobias Thomas who is also a music theorist (or journalist) for German pop magazine SPEX.

He plays regularly in Berlin’s Panorama bar and has gigs all over the world. In his mixes he is not so minimal at all, but has a nice feel for some pop, elegiac and hands up moments. Enjoy the following mix (which is not always tight and perfect but very warmhearted and with the real club feeling to it) which was recorded at Kiosk Club in Lille in 2006 and is kindly hosted by Dviason.

Just coming back from from two cool parties: Vice magazine with a lot of cool new bands, among these “Yes Boss” and “Ripchord” and the new amazing location of Picknick on Luisenstraße. I took some videos, am going to post them later.

But for now, here’s a new mix for the DJ mixes category, it’s a guy from Frankfurt with the strange name WJ Heinze and he posted a pretty heavy techhouse mix which is not exactly of the minimal kind they like in Berlin, but courageous and forward, without compromises and with lots of balls and guts. It’s called November and for those of you who like a little ravy atmosphere and strobes and such, this is for you. (Actually Heinze is one of the founders of Neuton and has been producing with techno veterans as Oliver Lieb, Toni Rios, Frank Lorber or Pascal FEOS, so he knows what he’s doing)

MyMy DJ Mix

I am posting many DJ mixes here, at least one per week. I like listening to them, it’s always an update for recent clubmusic and makes you whistle the synth-melodies on the dancefloor. But I needed to wait long for a mix that makes me so hypnotized, euphoric and excited.

If you ever thought housemusic was in danger, in between boring, uninspired, dull rhythms and ideas and the big commercial Ibiza monster, you can understand when Kerry Chandler says: “I see you’re lost.. lost in the oblivion.. trying to follow the trends.. believing in your own hype..”. But relax, because here are the people who are going to heal house music. And their name is: MyMy.

They are three guys from Berlin: Lee Jones, Carsten Klemann and Nick Höppner. They have a regular night at Watergate but play a lot around Europe as well. Recently they released an LP on Playhouse which has been widely credited as well.

This mix is also taken from the Resident Advisor Podcast and friendly as they are they posted the tracklist in the forum. I was pointed to it by a comment from _tom_!. Thank you!

This is a magic site. It is a world to explore. A world of love for vinyl and old treasures. Storing them, playing it to people and keeping the culture alive. Parties with this music always have a nice feel: well dressed people, smooth moves, drinks and a steadily rising temperature.

The people behind this site are Cuebism and Gloria. Cuebism is a DJ, producer and remixer who is connected to the fine artist network Metronomic Family. At the moment he lives in Stockholm, plays at many clubs in Germany, yet not in Berlin. I think that should change!
I could not really find out who Gloria is, I’d say a person with a good taste in music at least.

No, but his beats are of this kind fluffy and nice, that, were I a rapper would like to use them for my lyrics. Besides, I like J.’s style: He likes Portishead, Curse, Nirvana and Nancy Sinatra. Samim Liveset

Samim is one part of the famous “Fuck Pony“. Together with Jay Haze he lifts the ubiquitous Berlin minimal sound to a sophistcated and even soulful level.

Recently the Swiss-Iranian moved from Zürich to Berlin to bring his musical career to a new level. Here is a brilliant liveset, very deep and subtle, recently released by his booking agency Contexterriorbookings. You can find DJ mixes of him there, too.

And he’s well connected on the web, you can find him at many social media sites, e.g. add Samim on Myspace and most of all, start reading his blog Robidog about netculture and with nice links to remixes and DJ sets.

Erik Panzer in the mix

“Panzer” is German for “tank”. While his music is less violent than the name insinuates, it’s not less powerful at all. Here is a mix from the Patentblau Open Air Party, minimal, dry, techy and very funky stuff. It’s like dusty techhouse.
And the funny thing is: Erik Panzer is his real name! That guy had to become a DJ..

Birdy Nam nam are four turntablelists from Paris who have a very special taste for records with pianos, organs, pipes and hammonds. I love turntablelism, i can even watch battles and routines most people would find hard to digest but what these Francaises are doing here is so funky and jazzy, it should blow everyone’s mind: BirdyNamNam.com Go to the video section and select video number 5: “Kind of laid back au Point Ephémère”. Minilogue Liveset at Panaroma Bar

Picture from Discogs Minilogue are from Sweden and like most Swedish people they are great musicians. They have that certain scandinavian feel for nice and sometimes melancholic melodies. In this case, it is embedded into a very smooth, feathery and dreamy sound architecture. It’s hypnotizing, you want to close your eyes and raise your hands and dance.

Claude von Stroke mix

Claude von Stroke appears on San Francisco’s label Dirtybird and I have seen him on several DJ charts I trust recently. Here is a nice mix, very solid, dry, funky, synthie-techy and sometimes even a little ravy and dreamy. Give me a strobe for the stroke!

“llJazz is a monthly mix podcast serving up soulful sounds from the past and present. It’s all about rare grooves, party breaks, selective hip-hop tracks, and vintage electronic cuts.” Illjazz is Andrew from New York djing, he’s a really sociable guy and has a great taste in music. As long as it’s good and funky it’s perfect for him. And for me, too!

I especially enjoyed his sheep meadows mix of soulful house music. The setting is like this: “Each weekend afternoon, hundreds of rollerskaters come down and dance on skates to funk, disco, garage, house, etc. mostly older people who used to party back in the 70s and 80s NYC club scene - Paradise Garage, The Loft, etc. Lot’s of funky ass people!!” Enjoy some original New York house:

DJs Anonymous linked me as a friend! And they released a new mix by Ben Mono, see below. Great stuff, deep and funky, slow and grroovy, spacy bit hop soul infusion!

Moreover, Marco Delvai is going to play in Berlin, Yaneq invited him to Berliner Wald: spoken word unlimited with Wolf Hogekamp, Bas Böttcher, FlowinIMMO and Jim Dunloop at the funky Rhodes on thursday, 21.9.!

And from tomorrow I’ll be going to the Wizards of OS to see Lawrence Lessig and meet Yochai Benkler for a short interview. Not to talk about the party on saturday. So, some pretty interesting days coming up, stay tuned for some stories!

Wow, so many plans and no time to realize it all. So, note to self: Do it, lazy boy!

1st: Integrate tags into stylewalker - I have enough content now to tag it more thoroughly and it would be cool to let people participate - suggest tags and if I like them they will be part of the categorization. Does anyone know a good WP-plugin?

Start a blog about organizational identity and weblogs. I am writing my master thesis and should export some wisdom to the net.

Buy a DJ! A friend is coming from Barcelona, Marco Delvai, you can book him for little money and big fun! Expect more information later.

A guide to MySpace - people keep asking me what to do there and I should write down all the things I tell each one of them.

Pentagonik is a netlabel which means they publish all their releases online, in this case for free and without any restricitions. The labelmakers and producers have an impressive and high quality output of bouncy techhouse tunes, often with a playful attitude. A good introduction to the pentagonik style is DJ Cotumo’s labelmix, out on Zerinnerung. Drives forward and gives you sunday teaparty at home nice after-hour feel!

I am a huge Uffie fan and was delighted to hear a new track on this brilliant DJ Shir Khan mix on DJs anonymous (goes like this: “when I go out - some like to get me drunk and wild but the only thing you get tonight is my fucking drink tab” - yeah!).

DJ FEX is from France and actually, Laurent Garnier comes to my mind as a reference when I listened to that mix. It’s funky, fast, driving like “un autoroute” and contains some hits we like to listen to again and again on the dancefloor (Carl Craig and many others..)

You know DJ Stone, don’t you? It’s the guy with the discoball, one of the Freunde Berlins and the GMT crew, a cutting edge DJ who is minimal and soulful, two things that don’t need to be conflictive at all.

In a brandnew mix he represents his definition of “verspult”, later it’s deeper and pushier. (he even said: “goa trance for adults”. well..). Very Berlin, very intense, very großartig!
