Sbtrkt came out of nowhere and just like James Blake, Jamie Woon and Nicolas Jaar captured very fast a place in the area of bassy, dubby and abstract dance and pop music. All they did, they did well and everything seems planned and thought. Their debut record “Sbtrkt” is very complete and well done, they have a real hit on it to get radio plays (“Pharaos“), they remixed Radiohead and released mixtapes for RinseFM and Mary Ann Hobbs.

Boiler Room

Boiler Room is a regular livestream from a very small club in London. They do a good job bringing interesting people in like Four Tête, James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Martyn, Theo Parrish, Jamie XX or Little Dragon who play their favorites and edgy tracks. It is watched and discussed simultaneously online and they have a nice podcast running.

I tuned into today’s (tuesday, 19/02/2011) show to listen into the Black Acre session with @bluedaisytwit, @FM_Fox and @Hyetalmusic. To sum it up: Interesting new sounds, I especially liked the Fantastic Mr Fox, cool to watch the musicians editing plus I really got this live feeling: seeing some people dancing in the background, watching the musicians, with a twitter stream, facebook and ustream chat boxes all around the video and people constantly writing stuff.

Mostly people write that they are there watching it, but sometimes also commenting the music, sharing links, tweeting to the bands. Who, and this makes the concept interesting, are mostly also on Twitter and get linked to by the boomboxtv account or by one of the founders and organizers Thristian Richards. But while most performers have accounts, only a few of them would check the discussion while doing music, I assume.

To be honest, there was no real discussion it was more the feeling to be watching the same stuff at the same time that made the experience interesting. And of course, the intimacy of being somehow at a living room party, like you can see in this video, Hudson Mohawke playing a 90ies classics Hip Hop set.

In a Time Out magazine article, Blaise Bellville, the other cofounder, talks about up to 25k viewers when James Blake was on, in this video interview Thristian Richards talks about the concept behind it. Richards is also a dj and Belville used to run “Platform”, a web magazine. It’s offline now, pointing to a new project called Leisure only but I found a nice readplatform.com snapshot from the Wayback machine.

The club is now located at Corsica studios, a small venue inside of railway arches near Elephant & Castle, maybe on their Facebook there is a chance to be invited to the actual performances.

New Stylewalker DJ Mix: Nudisco to deep

Bergstübl last friday and here is one hour mix of that session. I played more than 5 hours which I haven’t done in a long time. Here is a mix I recorded in the beginning of the evening, it starts of with some nice remixes including Doors and Grandmaster Flash lyrics, brings in Trickski’s überhit Pill Collins, Rodion’s Electric Soca, Chopstick & Johnjohn’s Clear Eyes, Cruel Intentions by Simian Mobile Disco (Maurice Fulton remix), Louder by Major Lazer always is a good tune to wire people up, Black Van – The Calling is next, Pawas – It’s Working (Trickski remix), the Blackvan remix of Aeroplane’s Without Lies, Test is a pretty deep track by Mario Basanov and Vidis, I tried to mix in Reckless with your love by Azari, the Manuel Tur remix,and here we are in more elctronic surroundings with Antony Shakir’s Detroit State of Mind and this is where the mix ends. It was a great evening, thanks to everybody who was there.

Aber auch der Rest seines Dezembermixe hat es in sich, eigentlich sind alle Mixe durchweg gut, da ist der wunderschön dubbige, sphärische Sound of Yagya Mix oder den krachigen Dubstepmix von Flashfonic oder der seelenvolle, mit Nick Cave beginnende, von Ronny frenetisch gefeierte Marco Fürstenberg Mix. Was ich gut verstehen kann, denn dieser Mix baut sich so unwiderstehlich und unaufhaltsam auf, dass man Lust hätte, es wäre jetzt schon der erste Januar, morgens um 9.

Unfortunately, this is only an interaction mockup. But hell, what a great idea! The American designer Gerg Werk put together an ideal digital system to install in clubs so DJs would only have to bring a flash drive with their setup and music and plug it in. It’s a touchscreen that emulates several decks and is controlled by different finger gestures to perform the most important DJ functions, like pitching, cue points, equalizing, mixing and even looping. May I present my favourite podcasts dealing with dj mixes in the last months.

1. Resident Advisor
Every week a new mix and everyone is of high quality. The genres are diverse from heavier Berghain techno (Dettmann, Fengler) to Experimental (Surgeon), Discoish (Brothers Bouaziz), straigt club (Carl Craig) or dubby and steppy (Applebim).

2. Ninja Tunes Solid Steel
Ninja Tunes used to be and is one of my favourite labels, with their Solid Steel radio show they always manage to surprise and show the diversity of their taste. Bass filled music, rare funk tunes, club bangers come together in this always very well selected and presented mixes. Here is an example of Clubb Rock’s Darren Judge & Mikee Lazy with tracks from Lady Chann, Seiji and MJ Cole, Untold, Joy Orbison and Ramadanman.

3. Drumandbass.de
Holding up the Drum’n'Bass flag for the German scene, J-Cut and Kolt Siewerts unregularly present fresh tunes from the drum and bass universe, pretty straight, with J-Cut leaning more to the liquid, said easy and dense, side of the range, Siewerts with more jumpy and wobbly stuff. With a very entertaining style of presenting their show they soon hit the German podcast charts. Here is one of their own production, also a hit last year, the “Flute Tune” to get an idea.

4. Fabric London
Despite the tragic fact that London’s probably best club has gone into administration their podcast is one of the podcast pearls at the electronic music’s heaven. Great mixes and music presentations by people like Four Tet, Surgeon, Vadim and Jazzanova. Absolutely listenable.

6. Also very awesome and for all the dubby dubstep lovers (just like me) around here is the Wax Treatment Podcast. The regular sunday dubstep night at Horst Berlin features DJs like Pete and Surgeon. Dubstep from its nonwobbly, but atmospheric and complex side.

Eigentlich habe ich nur das Video posten wollen und bin dann erst richtig in die Comfort Fit Welt eingestiegen. Der Typ ist der Hammer! Erst einmal habe ich mich daran erinnert dass ich schon früher seine Tracks mochte, die auf Tokio Dawn Records rauskommen, m.E. einem der wenigen wirklich guten Netlabels. Damals, vor vier oder fünf Jahren ist mir das durch den De:Bug Podcast reingelaufen. Und jetzt dieses Video und ein tolles neues Album. Und eigentlich habe ich den Artikel für das Urban Blog von Beck’s geschrieben, aber er passt eigentlich noch besser auf Stylewalker . Also: Enjoy!

So sieht es aus wenn aus einem schönen leeren 50er Jahre Zimmer eine durchgerockte Partybude wird. Sehr schön gemachtes, aufwendiges Stop-Motion Musikvideo für Comfort Fit’s Bit by Bit.

Comfort Fit ist Boris Mezga und stand schon mit 12 hinter den Plattentellern. Anschließend machte er sich einen Namen in Kölns Musikszene, vor allem in der Creative Commons Landschaft und als einer der herausragendsten Künstler auf Tokyo Dawn Records, die seit 1997 extrem gute Musik frei im Netz veröffentlichen.

Cologne Commons beschreibt seinen Stil sehr gut:

Ursprünglich inspiriert durch minimalen Detroit-Techno, Ninja Tune, Nujazz und Hiphop, feilte er schon damals an seinem sehr intelligenten, vielfältigen, aber immer klar erkennbaren ganz eigenen Stilmix zwischen cinematischen Soundlandschaften, schlurfenden Hiphop-Beats mit stolpernden Bässen gepaart mit Samples und akkustischen Instrumenten und teilweise Gesang namhafter Künstler wie z.B. den Blaktronics oder Mercury Waters, die seinen Stücken eine musikalische Hörspiel-Note verleihen.

Sein neues Album heißt “Polyshufflez“, auf der u.a. Blaktronics und der legendäre Howards Marks aka Mr Nice mitgewirkt haben, und erscheint ebenfalls als Download auf Tokyo Dawn Records, dazu gibt es eine sehr schön designte limitierte CD-Version.

Wirklich unglaublich deepes, cooles, verschwurbeltes, hoppiges, steppiges, verrauchtes Zeug!

This is a good line-up, especially Birdy Nam Nam who are a kick-ass, four headed DJ crew from France with lots of style and creativity. On four decks they manage to create entire songs, supertight and ready to dance. Their big achievement is to find ways in between turntable/nerdism and straight club feel. Together with Crookers and Léonard de Léonard this sounds like a night of sweat and fun.

Is it now closed forever? The legendary Bar25 had some closing parties already, this august was another one. This open air, after hour party place, close to the river rents its land from the Berlin sanitation department and every year needs to negotiate a new contract. Depending on public will and the awareness that subculture is one of Berlin’s biggest assets, they might get a new for 2010, the pary will go on and we will see yet another closing party.
Here is a mix from this year’s last fest, by Dirty Döring – trippy, circuslike, dancy, dreamy a little balearic and minimal at the same time.

Excellent dubstep mix by Haito

This mix is fantastic, it presents the deep, warm and longing side of the dubstep, not the aggressive and wobbly part. Funny enough it’s to promote Haito’s new record which is rather tech-housy than dubby. Haito has been djing and producing since 1988 and now comes out on Boxer recordings.

It’s the second release on NIG (Nights in Gale) records and I love the record because it’s so diverse: there is a massive techno tune, some very dissected minmal soundscape techhouse thing by Tom Dicicco and a deep dubsteppy remix by David Harrow.

Now, it has gotten some very mentionable mentions from Japan and Italy, good feedback from Timo Maas and Laurent Garnier and, amongst others, charted by Ryan Elliot.

Jazzanova Remix Contest

At the Webby night, an event to promote the Webby Awards which took place yesterday in Berlin, Eric Wahlforss introduced an amazed crowd to Soundcloud once again, putting it in a logical line with YouTube (video) and Flickr (foto).

Right now, there is a Jazzanova remix contest going on which also demonstrates the power of the Soundcloud API. It’s fascinatingly simple: Download the samples needed, upload the remix track and listen to all other uploads. It’s automatic, baby. And the outcome is of a surprising quality as you can hear for yourself in the widget.

Another very funny presentation about Memes and how they produce a life on their own from the web to the meatspace and back that should not be missed is by Peter aka The Waving Cat.

It’s 2Step, it’s dubstep, it’s even a little Goa.. And I am listening to it like the 5th time in a row, so it can’t be bad, really. Scuba Dubstep mix for XlR8

It’s not the typical noisy toothsayery dubstap massacre what Scuba serves us in another excellent XLR8 podcast but rather a very deep and flirry mix which accelerates veeery slowly and has a curve of tension which is hardly noticeable. Still, this mix contains some energy which is hidden deep in the bass. I love it.

Many, many tracks did he put together this time. My man Shir Khan managed to find some time for a superb dj mix for the XLR8 podcast series. Quite an output for a man who not only plays shows like a maniac, but also runs the Blog Berlin Battery with lots of exclusive Mp3s and hosts a weekly radio show, “Soundgarden” on Fritz.

The tracklist is exquisite, Shir Khan features almost 80 songs with tracks by Diskokaine, Tomboy, Adamski, Sirius Mo, Plasticman, Malente, Egoexpress, Surkin and many others.

Pimpin’ aint easy – from Hong Kong to Berlin

Now this is a great story. Here’s a kid, from a German small town, Göttingen. He becomes a dj and is obessed with training with the decks. He gets really good, becomes a champion. Plays all over Germany, Europe, US. Goes on a tour to Asia – and stays there, playing regularly at parties in Hong Kong.

His name is Kid Fresh and I already wrote about him. Looking at the pictures on the partyblog accompanying the “Pimpin’ ain’t easy” parties in Hong Kong, he deals with a very fancy party crowd there.

Tonight he’ll be playing at Scala, Friedrichstr. Pimpin’ ain’t easy? In Kid Fresh’s case, this might be untrue.

This weekend in Berlin will see art, music, politics and overall a mashup of all: Friday night will see Substance, the biggest Dubstep party on the European continent so far, at Berghain, there is the big art festival Videoakt on friday and saturday where Stylewalker’s going to spin, and on sunday people living in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg have the chance to cast their votes for or against the urban development project Mediaspree.

Substance

Berghain, Berlin’s most famous techno temple and house of the Panorama Bar, will open it’s gates on a friday night for the first time (usually it’s only Panorama Bar on fridays) to host probably the biggest Dubstep party on the European continent so far: Shackleton, Scuba, Appleblim, Skull disco, Mala, DJ Distance – find more about the artists, links and music at Grimetime.

Moreover, you have the chance to enjoy Berhain’s new sound system: Funktion One. Paulie at Dubstepforum says about it: “It’s got the best sound I’ve ever heard in a big club. Funktion 1 rigs all the way round… ”

Videoakt
Videoakt is a video art festival hosted by the organization GlogauAIR, a non profit organization founded with the intention of creating a meeting point between different artistic disciplines, important is their Artist in Residence Programme, lots of international artists, e.g. from South America live and work there.

Me, Stylewalker, have the big honour to create a musical scape for the video art, together with Steve (remember the House party, almost three years ago?) and VJ Hitektrash from 11pm, at Glogauer 16.

Mediaspree

Mi nombre es Buen Pachanga”. This is how this absolute Mediterranean set by Luciano starts, directly from Ibiza and you can literally feel the sand in between your dancing toes. It’s all about deep and a little trancy grooves, a slow bass drum and some screams in the background. Summer can be so untroubled.

3 years of Innervisions mix and Ben Mono mix

In a techno city like Berlin, Innercity, a regular club night held by the Innervisions crew (read about it at taz) used to be the haven of groovy and soulful club music, from old to new, from disco to house. Headed by Dixon with many guests over the years, Innervisions at Week-End was a sure standard in the club scene for elegant party goers.

On Saturday January 19th, Innervisions celebrated their third birthday and at the same time their last party at Week-end. As a thank you, they gave away a free CD to all of the party guests – and it’s brilliant. Starts with very slow and dreamy funk tunes, moving into more minmal housy tunes, featuring I:Cube, Château Flight and Martin Buttrich. A very POWERful mix by Harrison Schaaf

What a name. Harrison Schaaf. Considering that “Schaf” in German in “sheep” and taking into account that sheep normally are very quiet (unless there’s a dog chasing them around..) and frugal animals, this is a total contradiction.

Via thefastlife comes this very powerful mix by the guy that Palms Out named “the next Kavinsky”. It’s eighties, it’s RAP, it’s a little cheesy synthie stuff, it’s not minimal at all, but boosts out with lots of glow and sweat. Get Schaaf’s “Gigantic mix” on Zshare.

Just flew in via Myspace, here’s a new mix by Berlin based DJ Cotumo, I very much dig. It’s fluffy, a little trippy and percussive but not too much of one thing. I guess you can call it Minimal..

Hi bio says: “Inspired by artists like Matthew Herbert, Akufen and Metro Area, Johannes began thinking about sharing his music through playing in Clubs. Nowadays Cotumo plays at Netlag, Pulsar, Pentagonik, Klangsucht, Süss&Sauer partys and at a variety of festivals and clubs in and around Berlin. After playing in London in 2006 he is aiming to Wales, Turin and Zuerich. He is also organizing his own party series ‘Club der Dilettanten’ with his cousin, known as µ~, where 15 DJs play 5 of their most loved records.”
